This poem by Samantha Lee Counselling really sums up the counsellor/client relationship, doesn't it? How many times have you said out loud that being a counsellor is an honour, or that being trusted with our clients stories and mental health is a privilege? I feel that every day. And I say it often, in those conversations that are the lines of "I don't know how you can do what you do, listening to people's problems all day".
Does this kind of honesty help? I think it does. It helps to demystify the process of counselling, and humanise you as the therapist in a profession where we sometimes feel that we can't say very much about it.
Normalising counselling helps people feel less scared of trying it out for themselves. What could you post today that might reach someone who wants to try?
I want to talk about a special relationship today.
For those of you who have experienced counselling, you will know that there is something incredibly powerful about the relationship that develops between Counsellor and Client.
This is someone who, over time, you will build incredible trust in.
Someone you can say absolutely anything to and there will be no judgement.
You don’t have to worry that when you share what you’re really thinking, they will be upset or think differently of you.
Today I want everyone to know that my profession feel honoured that people place this trust in us.
Every time I see another client get back to feeling ok with life, it reminds me just how powerful being properly listened to can be.
We want you to know that although the thought of therapy can be scary, you are safe with us.
The Counsellor
You don’t know me, I don’t know you, we’ve never met before
Two total strangers weeks ago, before you found my door
What made you choose my photo then, what made you think “that’s her?”
The one I’ll tell my story to, she’ll make me feel secure
What secrets you bestow on me, what trust you put in me
To find a space to talk in that feels safe to set pain free
To trust that I can help you in a way that gives release
A way that over time will give you hope and give you peace
The keeper of your secrets, the witness to your story
The one who sees and feels your pain in all its’ awful glory
An honour like no other, to be given trust like this
To keep you in a safe place as you face your own abyss
The one who over time can see you change and see you grow
The one who keeps on listening ‘til you’re confident to go
And live your life with new eyes, with a vision that is clear
A new you - something priceless that us Counsellors hold dear
They call us wounded healers - did you know that to be true?
We’ve all “been there” in some way and have found our own way through
We’ve all had our own journey that has taught us what we know
So thank you for your trust in us, we hope we’ve helped you grow.
