That’s the third anniversary of my new hip🎉🎂!!
This year I have mainly been hillwalking, doing more BJJ, open water swimming and beekeeping.
Thanks again to NHS surgeon Ed Dunstan for his handywork and to Mrs M and the kids for their constant support.

So about 26 months after my right hip replacement I competed in my first ever Hyrox fitness race with my daughter in Amsterdam last weekend.
What an experience!!
The hip did the NHS proud💪💪.

Apologies, bit late on this one, but just wanted to wish my new joint a very hippy 2nd birthday (1st Aug.)
In the last year I have continued to hit the gym, mountains, rugby pitch and BJJ mats (promoted too!)
To fully test the hip out, I have entered Hyrox Amsterdam with my daughter for charity in October.
If you don’t know what Hyrox fitness racing is, there’s a link in the comments👍.
Will report back.

One of the things I was keen to do post op was get back into the mountains again.
Before the hip replacement, I could just about get up hills but coming down was so painful it was untenable.
Last week I bagged my first Munros since the operation with a wee daunder up Buchaille Etive Beag, in Glencoe.
I even managed an overnight wild camp with Ghillie on some pretty rough ground with no ill effects.
Remember to liaise with your own med teams before you try anything.
All our recoveries are different.

Want to wish my new hip a very happy first birthday.
Things are going better than expected.
From being in constant pain and not being able to walk properly I’ve got back to doing the things I love - running, rugby, BJJ and cricket (the pics below were all taken in the last few months👍💪.)
Couldn’t have done it without Mrs M and the kids’ support.
Thanks also to the team at Balbirnie Gym and the staff at the Vic Hospital in Kirkcaldy.
Special back slap for my surgeon, Ed Dunstan - a life-changer.
Onwards and upwards!!

Op was on 1st August and that’s me back in my happy place - on a running machine.
Whatever stage you are at on your journey and whatever your final goal is - you CAN do it👍!
Expect to have the odd setback and creaky days - but never, ever give up.

Week 7 post op update-

Hi guys. Thought I'd drop in an update at the end of my seventh week post op.

The wee infection I had in the lower part of my wound has been cleared up with some very solid antibiotics. I was put on a slab of horse size pills for a week and we seem to be clear of it now which is a relief.

It means I can get going on my bio oil again.

I've also been able to pick up my training and fitness drive.

I've upped my cycling distances to nearly 20 miles each trip and will hopefully be doing 4 or 5 rides a week now. I have finally managed to get a sweat on again.

I also coached my mixed ability rugby team for the first time in about four months on Thursday night.

It was great to be back with the lads and I even managed to jog around with them a few times. The grass was quite long and the ground was soft so I thought it was a risk worth taking.

It felt great, but I was pretty sore in the morning though!!

Good luck with all your recoveries.

Onwards and upwards👍!!

Hi guys,

Here's a couple of pics from today's shenanigans.

The x-ray is of my new hip. I was allowed to take a copy at this morning's meeting with my surgeon.

Apparently I got titanium implants with a ceramic ball and socket joint.

To protect my modesty, I've had to blur out the outline of my old 'twig and two berries'🤣!! Don't want to put anyone off their lunch🤣🤮!!

The second pic is just after I'd finished my 8-mile bike ride this afternoon. I didn't feel sore and managed to get a bit of a sweat on. Felt great!!

Cycling has to be one of the best things to do post op - as long as you don't fall off!! Very low impact and a great way to get your heart rate up and burn some calories.

Remember to speak to your own surgeon and phsyios before you try anything new👍!

Onwards and upwards!!

SIX WEEK UPDATE-

Afternoon guys - hope everyone is doing well.

A few things to report.

After a week of horse pill sized antibiotics, my infection is definitely on the way out. Still not 100% sorted but it won't be long.

I met my surgeon this morning for my six week appraisal. Apart from the infection he was very happy with the way things have gone and said I could get back to doing some of the things I was doing pre op.

He wasn't too happy for me to start running until I had strengthened the muscles around my hip and only ran on soft surfaces, like sand.

That's all the encouragement I needed.

I shot home in the car and dusted down my mountain bike for the first time in a long while and headed out on a swiftish 8 miler.

It felt absolutely fantastic!!

I've attached a wee video I made on the way around👍!

Anyway, back to work on Monday and coaching my rugby team next Thursday night, hopefully.

Onwards and upwards fellow hipsters - keep fighting the good fight!!

A WEE HURDLE-

Morning fellow hipsters - I hope everyone is doing ok, wherever you are along your own joint journey👍.

After five weeks of seamless rehab and recovery I have hit my first wee blip. This is not a surprise as I was never expecting the jorney to be completely trouble-free.

To recap - since my operation on 1st August my hip mobility is now excellent and I am pain free. I am walking up to four miles each day without a stick or noticeable limp. I am doing resistance band exercises and about to start back at the gym on a weights' programme🏋️‍♀️.

I have also just bought a brand new pair of Asics running shoes (see pic) to get back to training and start getting some mileage under my belt🤸‍♂️⛹️‍♂️.

My wound is also coming along very well with 95% of it healing beautifully.

The wee issue is with the last 5%.

A trip to the GP yesterday followed by an inspection by an ortho registrar in A&E has confirmed I have a wee infection under the bottom 2cm of my scar.

There's no leakage and the scar is still fully healed and closed but the docs think one of the dissolvable sutures has decided to play up.

The area is red and hurts to the touch but other than that looks pretty normal. There is a small bump under the surface of the wound though.

So I'm now on a week of strong horse-size antibiotics that should do the trick.

I also happen to be seeing my surgeon next week for my six week check up and to get me back to work- I'll learn a bit more then.

I was prepared for something like this to happen so I'm not overly bothered - I'm sure it will sort itself out.

I'll let you all know how it goes next week.

Onwards and upwards guys👍!!
