Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care

Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care Phyllis Tuckwell is the only adult hospice care service covering West Surrey and North East Hampshire

For over 40 years Phyllis Tuckwell has provided supportive and end of life care to patients and their families living with an advanced or terminal illness in West Surrey and North East Hampshire, serving 550,000 residents. Every day we support over 250 patients, carers and their families in their own homes, in the community, at the Hospice in Farnham (In-Patient Unit, Day Groups, outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support) and the Beacon Centre in Guildford (Day Groups, Outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support). The NHS/Government usually only covers 20% of our costs, which means we rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community. All our services are free of charge to our patients and their families, but we need to raise over £25,000 a day to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care and support.

Our occupational therapists support patients to remain independent!

By meeting with patients regularly, our occupational therapists (OTs) can work with them as their condition progresses, providing the support they currently require, and looking ahead to prepare for their future needs. This begins with assessing how living with their illness is affecting their everyday life. It can then lead to prescribing equipment such as this chair, which can be controlled to lift and support a patient into a standing position, from which their carer can then help them into a wheelchair so that they can move around the house, or go out into the garden.

By working with patients throughout their illness, our OTs can reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and help patients to remain at home, empowered to manage their symptoms and participate fully in life, sustaining their quality of life as their condition changes.

Occupational therapy support in patients’ own homes.

Maggie was referred to our care by her motor neurone disease (MND) nurse, and is supported by our Hospice at Home team, who visit patients in their own homes and care homes across West Surrey and North-East Hampshire. She has had ongoing support from Catherine, one of our occupational therapists, to help her remain independent as her mobility decreases.

“With MND, you get intense fatigue; it's absolutely overwhelming sometimes,” said Maggie. “So the fact that Catherine comes out to me makes a big difference. It's really important.”

Occupational Therapy Empowers Patients!

3rd – 9th November is Occupational Therapy Week, highlighting how this vital care changes lives. “Occupational therapy supports patients to maintain their independence and participate fully in life,” said Kirsten, our lead occupational therapist. “It’s about more than managing a condition — it’s about enabling each patient to remain themselves.”

By providing a range of support - including equipment, advice and guidance - our occupational therapists empower patients to continue to manage activities such as showering, eating, going outside and socialising independently. With their help, patients can remain at home, benefitting physically, emotionally and mentally from maintaining their independence for as long as possible.

The Guildford Mayor proudly supported our Bake & Brew campaign by hosting his own event at the Guildford Borough Council Offices. 🍰☕

Emily from our Community Fundraising team thoroughly enjoyed being able to attend to support the sales of cakes and buy a square hamper raffle, whilst sharing the work of Phyllis Tuckwell with the teams.

The event was wonderfully supported by the staff and teams within the offices who were extremely generous with their support.

Thank you so much!

Sarah has recently raised a fantastic £561.45 for our charity by selling bouquets of the beautiful dahlias she grows on her allotment in her spare time, in memory of her dad, Derek. Phyllis Tuckwell cared for Derek in his final days.

“All the staff at Phyllis Tuckwell were absolutely amazing,” said Sarah. “They really looked after Dad, and us too. Flowers bring so much joy to people, and to me, and I wanted to spread that joy with my bouquets of dahlias, and by donating the money raised from them to a local charity which is so important and so close to my heart.

As well as her incredible fundraising, Sarah has also kindly donated some of her stunning dahlias to our In-Patient Unit, brightening our nurses’ days and bringing colour to the ward.

Thank you so much, Sarah, for your kindness and continued support, we’re so grateful!
