Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care

Phyllis Tuckwell, Hospice Care Phyllis Tuckwell is the only adult hospice care service covering West Surrey and North East Hampshire

For over 40 years Phyllis Tuckwell has provided supportive and end of life care to patients and their families living with an advanced or terminal illness in West Surrey and North East Hampshire, serving 550,000 residents. Every day we support over 250 patients, carers and their families in their own homes, in the community, at the Hospice in Farnham (In-Patient Unit, Day Groups, outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support) and the Beacon Centre in Guildford (Day Groups, Outpatient appointments and through Patient & Family Support). The NHS/Government usually only covers 20% of our costs, which means we rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community. All our services are free of charge to our patients and their families, but we need to raise over £25,000 a day to offer such an exceptional standard of clinical care and support.

Bereavement can leave you facing a spectrum of overwhelming emotions.

Talking to someone about your loss can help, and we offer a number of ways you can do this. For those in the early stages of bereavement, our Listening Lounge provides an informal space where you can talk to others who truly understand how you are feeling, because they are in a similar situation.

If the initial raw emotions of grief have not lessened after three to six months, then more formal counselling may help, such as individual sessions, or our First Steps group for those in the first stages of bereavement, and Second Steps for those further along.

Don’t let these fluffy robins fly away!

Our wonderful volunteer Angela, at our Farnham shop, said: “These cute little robin Christmas cards are flying off the shelves!”

They’ve been our most popular card this year, and have already sold out once. They’re now back in stock, so hurry along to one of our shops, or visit https://ow.ly/Bm9B50XzUb5 to buy them online.

In our auction we have the most delightful brand new handmade dolls house. It is very difficult to explain how beautiful it is with just photos. It has power, so the lights go on and off.

Each room has many handmade items (cupboards, desks, chairs, rocking horses and much more are hand made too). There are a few accessories that aren’t hand made but they are things like the kitchen utensils, that every home needs. The rooms have curtains that can be open or shut. When you lift the lid there are three more rooms! It even has its own conservatory that also lights up and has a full compliment of accessories in it too.

We have added some photos below for you to look at, apologies for some being blurry but hopefully it helps you see how much comes with this house.

Listening helps us provide better care.

By finding out what problems our patients are facing, we can tailor our care to their individual needs. Gerard, from our Pastoral Care team, supported Fred, one of our patients, when he was going through a difficult time. He listened as Fred explained how he was feeling, and helped Fred to see that our Living Well sessions could improve things for him.

“I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said Fred. “I wouldn’t eat or drink; all I wanted to do was sleep. When I first started the sessions, I wouldn’t speak, but now I’m beginning to open up. They’ve been fantastic. I’ve made friends there; I’m really happy there. Phyllis Tuckwell has changed my life completely.”
