Why funerals in the UK take so much longer than in Portugal….
It’s a question that may be on many minds as we’ve seen the footage from the funeral procession of Portuguese International footballer Diogo Jota.
🇵🇹In Portugal, it’s fairly normal for funerals to take place within 24–48 hours.
🇬🇧 Whereas in the UK the average is approx 7-20 days, in some situations more. Why?
👨⚖️We are bound by legal and official processes in the UK. Before a funeral can take place here, the death must be formally registered.
🧐If the death was unexpected or unexplained, a coroner or post-mortem may also be required — and we cannot proceed until these investigations are completed. These processes are essential but can add days, in some rare cases even weeks, to the timeline.
✝️ Climate & tradition — In Portugal’s warmer climate and Catholic culture, funerals have traditionally happened quickly, both for practical reasons and as a mark of respect.
📝Time to plan — In recent years funerals in the UK have become more of a celebration of life, are very bespoke and elaborate, giving families time to gather, arrange a service, flowers, music and more.
📅 Availability — Crematoria, venues, ministers & celebrants in the UK can also be very busy, which means waiting for the next available slot.
⌛️ So whilst we do everything we can to support our families in a timely manor, compared to places like Portugal, much of it comes down to law, authority, and culture — not choice.
The service for Diogo & his brother Andre reminds us that no matter the timeline, what matters most is the honouring of a life.
🙏 Rest in peace, Diogo and André.
