What do the people in the picture have in common?
Both have a great risk of suffering from lower back pain!
In these modern times, low back pain has been a common ailment between manual workers and office workers, between homemakers and students, and in almost every person in the planet since the age of 18, or younger. But what does a person more prone to suffer from it?
First of all, if the person in his childhood always carried a giant or overloaded backpack for school, the chances of suffering of back pain at a young age increases. Physicians recommend that children should not carry more than 15% of their body weight in their back.
Second, the chances increase a lot more if the person is overweight, obese or has not a good physical condition: if you don’t exercise your epaxial and abdominal muscles, all the weight is put in the lumbar vertebrae and intervertebral disks, leading faster to their degeneration. And if you put more weight on them, then it’s just a matter of time.
In addition, certain types of labor and activities can cause lesions which lead to back pain. Having a job that requires lifting, pulling, pushing or any activity that twitches the spine, can lead to epaxial muscle injury, muscle fatigue and/or lesion of the joints, causing back pain. A desk job can also contribute to this, specially if your posture is poor or if you sit all day on a chair. But even if you don’t work precisely in any of these types of jobs, activities that imply lifting, leaning, crouching or activities that move your back a lot could lead to injury if done incorrectly.
The risk of developing a condition that leads to back pain increases with age. And if your siblings, parents or other relatives suffer of one of these conditions, the risk for you is higher. During late stages of pregnancy it increases even more, as it’s the weight of two humans that your spine is carrying!
In conclusion, a lot of risk factors can lead to lower back pain. But maintaining a healthy posture, stretching before any physical activity, avoiding twisting when lifting, and keeping a healthy diet with proper exercise will greatly reduce your chances of going though this ailment.
