Following his clavicle surgery, one of the key priorities early on is maintaining gentle movement in the shoulder without overloading it - helping to prevent stiffness and muscle loss while healing continues.

Here’s one of the exercises he’s currently doing ⬇️

💡 Pendulum Movements (Early Stage Rehab)

Leaning forward to support the body, Allan allows the arm to move freely and performs:
✔️ Gentle up & down movements
✔️ Small controlled circles
✔️ Circles in both directions

⚠️ Important: Movement is kept below 90 degrees at this stage to protect the healing area.

📈 Current routine:
🔹 3–4 sets
🔹 10 repetitions
🔹 Performed daily

This type of exercise helps:
✔️ Maintain joint mobility
✔️ Reduce stiffness
✔️ Support circulation
✔️ Minimise muscle wastage

💥 Struggling with Back Pain? You’re Not Alone.

Back pain is one of the most common issues we treat at Recover Physio, affecting people of all ages - whether it’s caused by sport, work, posture, or simply everyday life.

In this session, Allan is using hands-on physiotherapy techniques to assess and treat the muscles and joints of the spine. Treatment is always tailored to the individual and may include manual therapy, mobility work, strengthening exercises, and guidance to help you move better and reduce pain long term.

Back pain can present in many different ways, including:
✔️ Lower back pain
✔️ Stiffness when bending or twisting
✔️ Pain when sitting or standing for long periods
✔️ Muscle spasms
✔️ Pain that spreads into the hips or legs

The good news? Most back pain responds very well to the right assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation plan.

In the first couple of weeks after this type of injury, the surrounding muscles - particularly the neck and upper shoulder muscles - often become very tight as they guard and protect the injured area.

One simple way to help manage this is through gentle neck mobility and stretching exercises, such as:

✔️ Pulling the chin gently back (chin tuck)
✔️ Tilting the head to the side to stretch the neck
✔️ Chin tuck combined with a slight downward angle towards the elbow

These movements help relieve tension through the neck and upper shoulder area while the collarbone continues to heal.

Even though the injured arm cannot move normally yet, it’s still important to keep the rest of the body moving where safe to do so.

Allan recommends:
🔹 2–3 sets
🔹 30 second holds
🔹 Twice per day

He also performs the stretches on both sides, as the body tends to tighten symmetrically during injury recovery.

Recovery is a gradual process - but small, consistent steps like this can make a big difference early on.

After the operation - which involved a plate and multiple screws - the first couple of days were understandably very painful. By day four, things had already started to settle, feeling more bruised and tender rather than acute pain, and he’s now off pain medication 🙌

Right now, the focus is on protecting the shoulder and allowing healing to take place. For the first couple of weeks, activity will be very limited before gradually building movement and strength back up step by step.

Recovery takes patience - even when you know the process - but progress is already happening and we’ll continue to share updates along the way 👏
