Letโ€™s be clear, if your horse is overweight, which many horses currently are, this reduces their ability to carry weight on their back.

Today I've put on my brave pants because equine welfare is important to me.... as is being kind, compassionate, supportive and understanding to my fellow riders. This topic is emotionally charged, but it's a conversation that is necessary and sticking our heads in the sand won't help ourselves or our horses.

๐Ÿง  Fat Shaming vs. Equine Welfare: Let's Clear This Up ๐Ÿด

In the equestrian world, conversations around rider size can quickly become uncomfortable. But here's the thing: talking about load limits isnโ€™t about fat shaming โ€” it's about equine welfare. Thereโ€™s a big difference between targeting a personโ€™s body shape and discussing what a horse can physically carry without risking pain, injury, or long-term damage.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Your amount of body fat or how much you weigh does not need to be discussed. In fact, a tall muscular person can weigh more than a shorter person who has higher adipose tissue (bodyfat).
This is not a conversation about anyoneโ€™s worth, appearance, or character. Itโ€™s about physics and biomechanics (which is measurable and does not change), and the welfare of our horses.

๐Ÿ“Š The Research Is Clear
Multiple studies support the 20% rule: horses should carry no more than 20% of their bodyweight, including tack and rider. Beyond this point, horses begin to display observable signs of stress and unsoundness โ€” regardless of how balanced the rider is or how well the saddle fits.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Key Findings

โœ… Clayton (2020) found that even with a balanced rider and appropriate tack, horses showed increased gait asymmetry, higher heart rates, and signs of discomfort when load exceeded 20% of their bodyweight.

โœ… Greve & Dyson (2013) observed that exceeding this threshold often led to lameness, saddle slipping, and altered movement patterns, even in well-conditioned horses.

โœ… Powell et al. (2008) demonstrated that horses carrying 25โ€“30% of their bodyweight had significant increases in muscle soreness, heart rate, and fatigue compared to those carrying 15โ€“20%.

โš–๏ธ Yes, There Are Other Factors Too
Itโ€™s not just about the numbers. Factors like the age of the horse, their back health, fitness level, the type and duration of activity, and rider skill and balance all matter. A fit, skilled, and light rider may impact a horse less than an unbalanced one โ€” but weight is still weight, and the research shows even the best riders cannot eliminate the risk once past the 20% threshold.

๐Ÿค No Room for Bullying
There is absolutely no place for abuse, bullying, or humiliation of riders. Conversations around appropriate rider-horse matching must be sensitive, kind, and thoughtful. Itโ€™s essential to create space for honest, supportive discussions without shame.

๐Ÿด But We Must Do More to Protect Our Horses
Our horses canโ€™t speak up when they are struggling. It is our duty to advocate for them, to keep their welfare front and centre, and to ensure they are not placed in situations where physical harm is inevitable.

If youโ€™re unsure whether you're within your horseโ€™s safe load limit, consider:

โœ… Weighing yourself and your tack

โœ… Knowing your horseโ€™s actual weight (not just guessing)

โœ… Speaking with a vet, bodyworker, or qualified saddle fitter

โœ… Exploring different breeds or horse types that better match your riding needs

๐ŸฅฐLetโ€™s keep these conversations kind, factual, and horse-centred.
Protecting our horses is not up for debate.

*** PLEASE USE SOME COMMON SENSE ABOUT WHETHER TO RIDE, LET ALONE TRAVEL, OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS (in the South of England, at least) ***

With temperatures set to be in the late 20s/early 30s for a few days, please do not ride, let alone travel to a clinic/competition, unless absolutely necessary. Iโ€™ve compiled a list of reasons why you would absolutely NOT travel to ride/compete over the next few days.

1. This is a โ€œminiโ€ heatwave - most riders can take a few days out of their competition schedules and not ask horses to compete in the extreme heat.

2. We have been having a few days of extreme heat, not consistently high temperatures, so our horses in the UK are absolutely not acclimatised to it.

3. Is your horse a heavier type, and/or overweight? Then absolutely do not travel to clinics/competitions in these temperatures.

4. Is your horse extremely fit? If not, then itโ€™s a big no.

5. Will missing a competition or training session over the next 3 days affect your qualifications and leave you with no further qualifying competitions/rounds? If the answer is no, then the answer to travelling is also no.

6. Is your horse a veteran (over about 16)? Then itโ€™s a no.

7. Is your horse only ridden once or twice a week anyway? Then itโ€™s very obviously a no to riding in this heat for 2-3 days, let alone travelling to do anything in it.

8. Does your lorry have fans/air conditioning? If not, then please donโ€™t travel in the heat of the day, even if itโ€™s just to move a horse; leave very early in the morning, or very late at night. Also check your travel route to avoid stationary traffic as much as possible.

9. Are YOU unfit and/or overweight? Then itโ€™s also a no, as not only will you be putting more strain on your hot horse if you tire, but you may also jeopardise your own health.

10. Do you know every early warning sign of heatstroke, and have cooling/misting stations and vets on hand at your clinic or event? If not, then itโ€™s a no.

A reused photo from yesterday, of us getting a quick (winning ๐Ÿ˜‰) jump in before the heat suddenly arrived. Alf is lean, fit, and a light type of horse, but I even worried about it getting a bit too warm for our second class yesterday.

Feel free to share, but not to copy and paste my words.

A controversial topic, but one that does need addressing. Horse welfare must always come first over your pride.

If your horse is under or overweight, then itโ€™s ideal weight it can carry will be less.

Another point, it is imperative your saddle fits both your horse, but also yourself. If your seat is too small for you, then your weight will be spread disproportionately creating increased loading at the back of the saddle.

Letโ€™s all put our egoโ€™s aside for the benefit of our horses โ™ฅ๏ธ

This video is circulating, and whilst it is very interesting, personally I think it is misleading. It is only one part of the whole picture.

By removing the ventral structures, such as the thoracic sling and abdominal muscles, which would counteract with a lifting motion. Therefore this demonstration has removed the tensegrity of the structure, and therefore the correct biomechanics of the long and low dynamic posture.

As we all know, horses can be rather stoic in nature and will tolerate a lot before showing overt signs of pain. โฃ
โฃ
As such, itโ€™s up to us to listen to our horses, listen to their whispers, before they have to scream, and recognise the subtle signs so that we can manage musculoskeletal pain more efficiently, before it becomes a real issue.โฃ

You know your horse better than anyone else. If something doesnโ€™t feel right then it probably isnโ€™t.โฃ
