Martina Cowen Nutritional Therapy Freedom from cravings, bloating + burnout, without diets or guilt ๐Ÿƒ

Hello, I am Martina and I am a passionate believer in the body's ability to heal itself, if given the right tools. From early years I watched her grandmother as she tended to her allotment and cooked with home grown fruit and vegetables and prepared tea and ointments from herbs grown in her garden. Growing up in the Czech republic on a small holding meant that most of my spare time was spent tending to the vegetable patch or the animals. This meant that I learned first hand not only that it's hard work but also that the benefits greatly outweigh the work. Daily meals were prepared using vegetables grown in the garden; where we also grew vegetables and grains used to feed the animals. Cooking with my mother and father were favorite past times (especially around Christmas time). It was these special moments that prompted me to study cookery in Melbourne Australia, where I gained certificate in Cookery. This was however, only part of my dream and after moving to Britain I became very interested in the nutritional benefits of specific foods. With the rising amount of convenience foods, crash diets and sugar consumption it was clear to me that many health complaints could be resolved by wholesome and nutritionally rich diet. I studied at the prestigious College of Naturopathic Medicine where I gained qualification as Nutritional therapist. I am a fully insured member of British Association of Nutritional Therapists (BANT) and Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). If any of the below apply to you, you would benefit from Nutritional therapy session with me:
- I crave sugary foods
- My energy dips in the afternoons
- My mood changes regularly
- I wake up tired
- I don't have the energy to exercise
- I want to lose weight
- I have thyroid problems
- I have eczema
- I suffer from asthma
- I suffer from bloating
- I have IBS
- I have a bad skin
- I'm hungry all the time
- I often can not sleep

If youโ€™ve tried plans, programmes, or โ€œstarting againโ€ more times than you can count, itโ€™s easy to assume youโ€™re the problem.
Youโ€™re not.

Often, itโ€™s simply that you havenโ€™t been met where you are.

Whether youโ€™re dealing with cravings, emotional eating, gut issues, or that constant mental noise around food, the Freedom Quiz helps you understand whatโ€™s really going on beneath the surface โ€” without labels, judgement, or food rules.

Itโ€™s a gentle starting point.
A way to gain clarity.
And a way to find the programme that fits your needs, your struggles, and your life.

No guessing.
No forcing yourself into the wrong solution.

Just support that actually makes sense for you.

If youโ€™ve woken up on January 1st hoping this year will finally be different, but quietly worrying it wonโ€™t be, youโ€™re not alone.

Every year starts with good intentions.
And every year, stress, habits, emotions, and old patterns tend to creep back in.

Not because youโ€™re weak.
But because cravings arenโ€™t a motivation problem.
Theyโ€™re a relationship-with-food problem.

If food has become a way to cope, switch off, get through the day, or manage stress, sheer willpower wonโ€™t fix that.
And another โ€œfresh startโ€ wonโ€™t either.

What does help is understanding whatโ€™s driving your eating, and learning how to respond differently, with support rather than self-blame.

This year doesnโ€™t need stricter rules or bigger promises.
It needs a kinder, more honest approach.

2026 can be the year you stop fighting food
and start feeling calmer, more in control, and more at peace around it.

If youโ€™re ready to take that step, weโ€™re here to help.
Get in touch and start rebuilding your relationship with food, gently, realistically, and for the long term.

Happy New Year ๐Ÿ’šโœจ

Every January, around 40% of people in the UK set a goal to lose weight, get fitter, or โ€œfinally get healthy.โ€
And every year, so many of those intentions fall away, not because people are lazy or unmotivated, but because theyโ€™re trying to do it alone.

No guidance.
No real support.
Just pressure, guilt, and a plan that never truly fit their life in the first place.

It makes sense if youโ€™ve felt stuck before.
Itโ€™s not your fault; you were never given the tools to make lasting change in a way that feels kind, doable, and sustainable.

Thatโ€™s where we come in.

At Freedom From Cravings, we focus on the real foundations of change:
โœจ Understanding your cravings
โœจ Rebuilding calm, steady habits
โœจ Supporting your relationship with food, not restricting it
โœจ Giving you personalised guidance so youโ€™re not guessing your way through another January

If this year you want clarity instead of confusionโ€ฆ
Support instead of self-blameโ€ฆ
And a healthier relationship with food that actually lastsโ€ฆ

Letโ€™s change that together.

โœจ The Mindful Eating Reset - Returning This January โœจ

After the festive season, itโ€™s so common to feel a little out of rhythm with food.
More cravings.
More mindless nibbling.
More moments where you finish eating and realise you barely tasted a thing.

Itโ€™s not a willpower problem.
Itโ€™s a connection problem.
And the good news is, connection can be rebuilt gently.

Your body already knows how to guide you.
It just needs some space to be heard again. ๐Ÿ’š

The Mindful Eating Reset is coming back at the end of January, a free 5-day challenge designed to help you:
๐ŸŒฟ Settle your cravings after Christmas
๐Ÿฝ Feel calmer and more in control around food
๐Ÿ•ฏ Enjoy meals again, without guilt, urgency, or restriction

Each day, youโ€™ll get a simple, science-backed prompt that helps you pause, tune in, and find satisfaction in your eating again, one small shift at a time.

If youโ€™re craving a reset that feels supportive (not strict), gentle (not overwhelming), and rooted in real lifeโ€ฆ

Mindful Eating: Christmas Edition ๐ŸŽ„โœจ

Christmas and food go hand in hand: the comfort, the memories, the traditions.
But itโ€™s also the time of year when cravings get louder and everything feels a bit more rushed.

Before you dive into the festive plates and puddings, give yourself a moment.
A breath.
A pause between wanting and choosing.

Mindful eating isnโ€™t about restriction.
Itโ€™s not about โ€œbeing goodโ€ or missing out.
Itโ€™s simply about slowing down long enough to enjoy whatโ€™s actually in front of you, the flavours, the warmth, the company, the moment.

When you take the pressure off, something shifts.
Cravings stop running the show.
Your body feels calmer.
You feel more in control, without needing rules or willpower.

This Christmas, let your choices come from presence, not panic.
From enjoyment, not urgency.
From care, not cravings.

You deserve to savour this season, one calm, mindful bite at a time.

I took this photo with my Christmas biscuits beside me, a Czech tradition I grew up with. The kind of food that carries memory, warmth, and family, not just ingredients or numbers.

And as I sat there, I noticed the familiar story that could have appeared in my head.

โ€œThese are bad.โ€
โ€œI shouldnโ€™t be eating these.โ€
โ€œIโ€™ll get back on track tomorrow.โ€

Most of us are carrying stories like this around, often without realising it. Invisible food rules weโ€™ve collected over the years. A list of โ€œgoodโ€ foods we try very hard to stick to, and a list of โ€œbadโ€ foods that come with guilt, tension, or a sense of failure the moment they show up.

Whatโ€™s rarely talked about is that even when youโ€™re being incredibly disciplined with your good list, those rules still come at a cost. They keep food loud in your mind. They turn eating into something you have to manage, control, or get right. And they keep your nervous system on edge, waiting for the moment you โ€œmess up.โ€

So when a biscuit appears (especially one tied to tradition, celebration, or family) the stress isnโ€™t really about the food itself. Itโ€™s about the meaning weโ€™ve attached to it. The belief that eating it says something about who we are.

Rules can feel reassuring at first. They promise safety and control. But over time, they quietly pull you further away from trust, trust in your body, in your hunger, in your ability to eat without overthinking.

Food was never meant to sit in moral categories. You are not good or bad based on what you eat, and food isnโ€™t either.

When we begin to soften the rules and gently question the stories weโ€™ve been telling ourselves, something shifts. Food loses its power. Cravings become quieter. Eating becomes simpler, calmer, and far less emotional.

If this resonates, know this: youโ€™re not broken and youโ€™re not lacking willpower. Youโ€™ve just been living under rules that were never designed to support you.

And those rules can be unlearned

If youโ€™re starting to notice how food rules and cravings are connected for you, Iโ€™ve created a gentle starter guide with 3 powerful strategies to help you find more freedom around food. You can download it, link is here: https://freedomfromcravings.co.uk/opt-ins/opt-in

10/12/2025

As the year begins to draw to a close, Iโ€™ve been reflecting on 2025, on what worked well, what didnโ€™t, and what itโ€™s taught me.

Working with clients this year has been a genuine privilege. The moments that stay with me are the ones where someone suddenly feels more themselves again, with fewer cravings, calmer digestion, steadier energy. Those shifts, whether subtle or life-changing, are why I love this work.

But Iโ€™ve also noticed something in myself that mirrors what so many of my clients experience.

When youโ€™ve worked from home for years, itโ€™s easy to choose the comfortable seat, the familiar rhythm, the path you knowโ€ฆ even if itโ€™s not really supporting you anymore. Staying where it feels safe is tempting for all of us.

And yet, growth rarely happens there.
Iโ€™ve realised that waiting for opportunities to come to me keeps me small. What hasnโ€™t worked so well this year is holding back instead of stepping forward, hiding behind the routine instead of getting out, meeting people, speaking, connecting, and letting others truly see the work I do.

Itโ€™s the same pattern I help clients with every day: the familiar feels easier, even when it isnโ€™t helping, and making a change requires a brave step.
But that brave step is where transformation begins.

So next year, Iโ€™m committing to more of that courage.
More conversations. More community. More visibility.
And another year devoted to supporting people with cravings, digestive issues and the low energy that can make life feel harder than it needs to be.

If youโ€™re ready to take your own small brave step, to feel calmer around food, more connected to your body, and more energised in daily life, Iโ€™d love to walk alongside you.

Hereโ€™s to growth, courage, and stepping into something better.

Rediscover the Wonder in Winter โ„๏ธโœจ

Winter can feel heavy. The cold. The early evenings. The sense that everything takes just a little more effort.
But sometimes the smallest shift can make the season feel softer, even enjoyable.

One of the simplest forms of winter self-care?
Fresh air.
Just ten minutes.

A quiet walk.
A slow breath in the cold.
A moment to remember that your body actually wants rhythm and gentle pauses.

Stepping outside, even briefly, helps you reset.
It calms the nervous system.
It lifts that foggy, โ€œstuckโ€ feeling.
And it reminds you that winter still holds wonder, if you give yourself a chance to notice it.

You donโ€™t have to love winter.
But you can make it feel more manageable, more peaceful, and surprisingly nourishing.

Start small.
Wrap up warm.
Let the season meet you where you are.

Rediscover the wonder in winter.
You deserve a moment of care, even now.

Are You Wintering Well? โ„๏ธโœจ
When the days get darker and everything slows down, itโ€™s easy to feel like you should push through or keep going at the same pace. But in Scandinavia, winter isnโ€™t something to fight. Itโ€™s something to welcome.

Wintering well is the simple, nourishing practice of embracing the season rather than resisting it.
Itโ€™s choosing warmth, slowness, and connection.
Itโ€™s creating a cosy indoor environment where joy still flourishes, even when the world outside feels heavy or cold.

Think soft blankets.
A warm drink.
A quiet moment by the fire.
A sense of permission to breathe again.

When you embrace the season instead of bracing against it, your body relaxes.
Your cravings soften.
Your mind settles.
And you remember that youโ€™re allowed to feel calm and held, even in winter.

So ask yourself gently:
Are you wintering well?

Letโ€™s embrace this season together and make space for the comfort, clarity and calm your body has been craving.

โœจA lovely message from one of this weekโ€™s participantsโœจ

โ€œI just wanted to thank you so much for this week. I love my food but had found I was always rushing and not really enjoying what I was eating, too busy moving onto the next thing.
These five days have made me take a step back, and breathe deeply, relax, and enjoy my food with no distractions (well occasionally with the TV on).
I have found that I am retraining my brain at every meal to stop, breathe, then eat and I do feel better already.
I also love the outdoors but noticed I donโ€™t have many plants inside so this weekend I am going to buy some indoor plants to help with my mindset.
Thank you once again I have learnt so much.โ€

If you would like support with slowing down around food and feeling calmer at mealtimes, my programmes are designed to help you build these steady changes in everyday life.
