We recently welcomed Dr Ian Welch to the team.

Dr Welch has a varied background, and particular interests in minor surgery and research and we are really pleased he's joined us and look forward to developing our work in these two areas further.

If you want to find out more about the minor surgery service we offer at the practice, full details are on our website (head to 'services', then look for 'minor surgery').

Have you ever taken part in health research?

As a practice we believe it's important to support health research and so wanted to share a couple of projects that patients might like to get involved with. The details of each separate study are on the two posters shared on this post, including how to find out more information or sign up to join the research.

Here’s a summary of the two projects we want to share with patients:

MyMelanoma is the largest melanoma research study in the world. Designed to answer the most important unanswered questions in melanoma research. Open to anyone who has ever been diagnosed with a melanoma of the skin, of the mucosal surfaces (e.g. nose, ge****ls) or under the nails.

Sudden hearing loss - Starfish is the name of a trial for patients experiencing sudden hearing loss. This project aims to explore the effect of different steroid treatments for adults with sudden hearing loss.

Why take part? Reasons include:

➡Life-changing treatments start with people like you.
➡By taking part, you can help people live healthier and better lives - now, and in the future.

🚨 JOB VACANCY - CLOSING DATE 26TH APRIL 🚨

We've a vacancy for a Community Care Nurse Practitioner / Advanced Care Practitioner and would love to hear from you if this is something you're interested in.

Hours: full or part time considered
Salary: dependent on experience
Closing date: 26 April 2026
Interview date: to be arranged

Some information about the role (more detail on website, see below):

As a Practitioner working within the Community Care Team, you will provide care for patients identified as vulnerable and those with complex physical and / or mental health needs, who are at high risk of hospital admission or readmission, with a focus on reducing avoidable unplanned admissions.

The role involves home visits to housebound patients, including those in nursing and residential homes, as well as palliative care patients. There will also be opportunities to see patients at the practice and support chronic disease management for our most vulnerable patients.

As well as working closely with all clinicians across the practice to support these patients, the team maintains excellent partnerships with wider healthcare teams and holds regular multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings. You will therefore also work closely with district nurses, hospice / palliative care nurses, health connectors, the hospital discharge liaison team.

There's still time to sign up to come along to our sustainable health care conference!

❗LAST DATE TO BOOK - 26TH APRIL

📅 Wednesday 6th May
🕙 10am to 4pm
📍 Frome Medical Practice, Enos Way, Frome BA11 2FH

This is an excellent opportunity to join us and explore how we can improve patient care while reducing unnecessary waste across the system.

The conference will showcase work already happening in Frome, across Somerset, and nationally, including de-prescribing projects, partnership working for system‑wide change, our successful Only Order What You Need campaign (which saved £280,000 in 12 months) and community‑based approaches to medicines optimisation.

The sessions we have planned are practical, relevant, and designed to
support the quality, safety, and sustainability work many of us are already involved in.

The conference is supported by the RCGP and will be opened by Vice Chair Munro Stewart. Speakers include Dr Georgie Kirby, Dr Angus Lean, John Digman, Rob Chisman, Deb Gompertz, Sarah Stacey, Andrew Tressider and Tom Veck.

You can find all the details and sign up to join us via the link below (or visit our website and search 'events' where you can find the conference listed)

❗Appointments available this week for your Spring COVID vaccination

If you're eligible for the Spring COVID vaccination we are booking appointments this week. You can book your appointment online, by calling us on 01373 301301 or by dropping into the practice and speaking with one of the team on our main desk.

The following groups are eligible:

• aged 75 years or over (by 30 June 2026)
• aged 6 months or over and have a weakened immune system
• a resident in a care home for older adults

(Please mention to anyone you know over 75 who might not spot this post)

COVID-19 is not just a winter illness and previous immunity can wane over time, so it is important to top up your protection. The virus continues to be dangerous for those most at risk, particularly older people and those with weakened immune systems, so we are encouraging all those who are eligible to come forward as soon as possible to get protected.

URGENT UPDATE - MONDAY 20TH APRIL, 10.45AM

The practice is experiencing intermittent IT connection issues this morning, which are impacting practices across Somerset.

If you have an appointment booked with us today we plan for it to still go ahead, but please be patient if we are running behind schedule. The issues are causing delays for some of our clinicians and slowing our work down.

As a result of the issues, we have put the urgent only message on for appointments today, as well as for prescription requests and the home visit line.

Many thanks for your help and patience today.

CALL FOR ARTISTS!

We have just found out we've been awarded some funding to do a focused piece of work on raising awareness about pancreatic cancer. The funding is to be used for creating an art installation at the practice and we are therefore seeking artists who might be interested in working with us in this.

The title of our project is '700 missed steps' and the aim is to create a powerful public art installation based around this theme. The installation will be revealed in November, as part of Pancreatic Awareness Month.

We are looking for:

➡ Creative interpretation
➡ Sensitive, impactful design
➡ Installation design using donated shoes
➡ Utilisation of a visible outdoor space at the practice, which measures approximately 8 metres by 8 metres.

The funding awarded for this work is £5,000.

The timeline for submissions of proposals is tight as we need to start work on this quickly - so please submit your ideas to tracey.mcculloch@nhs.net as soon as possible, by 22nd April if possible. Tracey is also available to provide further information if needed.

Please share with any artists who might be interested in this kind of commission.
