In Loving Memory of Edith Kathleen Wilson
28th March 1942 – 19th March 2026
It is with deep sadness that we have been asked to announce that Kathleen Wilson died peacefully in her sleep, in the early hours of Thursday 19th March 2026, aged 83 years.
Kathleen was born on 28th March 1942 at St. John’s Chaple in the Wear Valley, later moving to Nenthead in Cumbria. Growing up in such a remote and rugged landscape perhaps helped shape her quiet determination and her remarkable ability to accept all that life placed before her. These qualities were evident throughout her schooling, which included attending one of the smallest comprehensive schools in the country.
She went on to study at Neville’s Cross College, qualifying as a teacher and beginning her career in Wallsend. Following a move to Shropshire, she found a place where she was truly happiest.
Kathleen was a dedicated and caring teacher, and her commitment to her profession continued even as she embraced family life after the arrival of her children, Anthony and Judith.
Beyond her work and family, Kathleen had a deep love of travel. She found great joy in serving tea and coffee on tour coaches across Europe, delighting both in the journeys themselves and in the happiness of those she met along the way. Her greatest passion was cruising, which she described as the jewel in the crown of her travels, closely followed by her unforgettable experiences in New Zealand despite the long distance.
In 2009, Kathleen was diagnosed with cancer, a moment that brought an end to her travels due to insurance restrictions. Yet, in keeping with her nature, she never spoke a word of complaint or resentment, facing this chapter of her life with quiet strength and grace.
Kathleen was, in every sense, a beautiful presence in the life of those who knew and loved her. She will be remembered as a bright, shining, and guiding light—someone whose love, resilience, and warmth touched all around her.
She was the most beautiful thing in every respect that happened in my life. Life must go on but it will not be easy without that bright shining guiding light.
Her funeral will take place at Beetham Hall Crematorium on Tuesday 7th April at 3.30pm. Following the service, refreshments will be served at the Crookland hotel, where we can continue to remember Kathleen and share stories and memories.
Family flowers only please. Donations, if preferred may be made in memory of Kathleen to help support both ‘Cancer Research UK’ and ‘St. John’s Hospice’ care of the funeral director.
