๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’ŽReflecting on an incredible 2025 ๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Ž

As the year comes to a close, I'm taking a moment to look back with so much gratitude. This year has been filled with achieving New Business of the Year in the Kent Women In Business Awards, growth within our team and clients, moving into our new office, and none of it would have been possible without our amazing community.

โ€‹โค๏ธ To my staff: You are the heartbeat of this business. Thank you for your hard work, and the passion you bring every single day.

โ€‹๐Ÿค To our clients and their families: Thank you for choosing us and trusting us. Your support allows us to keep doing what we love.

โ€‹๐Ÿ  To my family and friends: Thank you for being my biggest supporters behind the scenes. Your patience and encouragement mean the world to me.

Weโ€™re heading into 2026 with bigger goals and even bigger opportunities, so watch this space ๐Ÿ‘€ ๐Ÿ‘€.

Wishing you all a safe, happy, and prosperous New Year! ๐Ÿฅ‚

A knife and fork can feel overwhelming because brain energy is required for all the sequencing movements.

Sometimes just changing the tool improves eating.

Try a spoon instead of a fork.
Sometimes larger or lighter handles on cutlery work better.
Finger foods instead of cutlery โ€” finger foods are so convenient.

Other small changes that can help:
โ€ข One utensil only โ€” remove the knife altogether
โ€ข Shallow bowls or plates with a lip to reduce spills
โ€ข Non-slip mats so the plate doesnโ€™t move
โ€ข Contrasting plate colours so food is easier to see
โ€ข Food already cut to remove extra steps.

I read this on a Dementia Advice page and thought I'd share with you all. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿ’Ž

When someone living with a dementia suddenly wants sweet foods, soft foods, or only a few favourites, people worry. But the thing is dementia affects taste, smell, and sensory processing.

Therefore food can taste bland, metallic or feel โ€œwrongโ€ in the mouth. Sometimes it can be too hot, too cold or too textured.

This is why the foods they used to love sometimes stop working because perception is altered.

Sweet flavours often remain detectable longer , which is why desserts, fruit, or sweetened foods suddenly feel safer.

The goal is not a โ€œbalanced plate.โ€ The goal is intake without distress.

If someone eats ice cream but refuses a full meal, thatโ€™s still nutrition.

Food rules must bend when the brain changes.
Be kind and relax, it will be less stressful for the caregiver too.

People living with a dementia refuse drinks for very real reasons, not because theyโ€™re being difficult.

Sometimes itโ€™s taste aversion. We all know water can taste metallic or bitter. Tea can suddenly taste wrong. Even a familiar drink may no longer register as โ€œpleasantโ€.

Sometimes itโ€™s fear of choking.
If swallowing feels unpredictable, the brain goes into self-protection mode. So now the brain thinks, Iโ€™ve got to keep safe

Sometimes itโ€™s loss of the thirst signal. The body may be dehydrated, but the brain no longer sends the message that says โ€œIโ€™m thirstyโ€. So from their point of view, the drink is unnecessary.

Sometimes itโ€™s sensory overload.
The cup is cold. The room is noisy. Someone is standing too close. The smell, the light, the movement. All these things stack up and the drink becomes the last straw.

And sometimes itโ€™s loss of meaning. Believe me, they donโ€™t know why youโ€™re offering the drink.
โ€œWho are you?โ€
โ€œWhat is this?โ€
โ€œWhat do you want from me?โ€
Without context, a drink can feel intrusive rather than helpful.

So when someone refuses a drink, pause before pushing. Try changing the cup, the temperature, the timing or how you offer it

Resist the urge to keep insisting and instead try to understand how the world feels for them in that moment because you really donโ€™t need to win the moment, you need to keep the person safe, calm, and respected.

Good dementia care lives in the why, not the battle.
Be kind.

โญ Time - is the greatest gift you can give someoneโญ

One of the things that we give to our clients, not just at Christmas, but all year round, is TIME โฐ

Time to get ready, time to talk, time to look around the shops, time to sit and have a cup of tea, time to take their medications and time to just simply be you. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Due to our call times being longer than most Domiciliary services, we are able to ensure that every individual we support gets the time that they deserve and need.
There is nothing worse than feeling rushed or feeling like you are holding someone up.
If everything is completed before our time, we don't leave, we find things to do, or if wanted, we just sit and chat. It's your time and that's what you get.

So remember, this Christmas, if all you can give is the gift of time, that'll be more than enough ๐ŸŽ
