Keeping your teeth healthy goes way beyond simply brushing and flossing. Yes, brushing twice a day and flossing daily is crucial, but your overall routine matters too. One thing people often forget is taking care of their toothbrush. After each use, rinse it well and store it upright in the open air to prevent bacteria from growing. Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months—or sooner for kids—especially if the bristles are worn out. Also, brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled brush can actually damage your enamel and gums, causing sensitivity and other problems.

Don’t forget your tongue! Brushing it helps reduce bacteria and fights bad breath. Diet also plays a big role—sugary drinks like sodas can lead to cavities, so it's better to drink more water, milk, and fresh juices. Fluoride is a must; it strengthens your enamel and helps prevent decay. Even if you brush well, not using fluoride can still put your teeth at risk. Make sure your toothpaste or rinse contains fluoride, and ask your dentist about extra fluoride treatments. Speaking of dentists, regular checkups help catch problems early. Smoking, on the other hand, weakens your mouth’s ability to heal, stains teeth, and causes bad breath—so it’s a habit best avoided.

Education is key, the links with oral health and brain health keep coming up 🙏

A recent study from Japan found a troubling connection between dental health and brain function, showing that tooth loss and gum disease are linked to shrinkage in the hippocampus—the part of the brain involved in memory and Alzheimer's disease. The study followed 172 adults aged 55 and older for four years, tracking their dental health and brain volume through MRI scans. Those with mild gum disease who lost teeth experienced faster shrinkage of the hippocampus, roughly equivalent to aging the brain by an extra year for each lost tooth.

Surprisingly, people with severe gum disease who kept more teeth also showed faster brain shrinkage, suggesting that holding onto diseased teeth might harm brain health. Researchers say this highlights the importance of not just keeping teeth but ensuring they’re healthy, emphasizing regular dental care to control gum disease. While this study doesn’t prove cause and effect and involved a small, localized group, it adds to growing evidence that oral health affects cognitive function. These findings serve as a powerful reminder that looking after your teeth could play a vital role in protecting your memory and brain health as you age.
