Medway NHS Foundation Trust

Medway NHS Foundation Trust This is the official page of Medway NHS Foundation Trust (Not 24/7). Includes news, updates and information from Medway Maritime Hospital.

Medway Maritime Hospital treats around 400,000 patients each year mainly in Medway and Swale, but increasingly other parts of North and West Kent too. Everyday we see around 1,400 outpatients, about 250 patients use our emergency department and approximately 150 patients need to be admitted for hospital care and treatment. The range of specialist services we offer have grown over recent years, as have the communities we serve, bringing to Medway services which in the past, patients have had to travel miles for. This includes the cardiac catheter suite, West Kent Vascular Centre, West Kent Centre for Urology, and the Macmillan Cancer Care Unit.

Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly in older people and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Simple steps can help. Get your winter vaccinations, if you're eligible, keep your home warm and check in on friends, family and neighbours.

Patients with neurological conditions are benefiting from special wheelchairs thanks to funding from Medway League of Friends.

Vital funds raised by generous donations and profits from the charity’s hospital shop and café, and Wainscott shop, have made it possible for the hospital’s neurotherapy team to purchase four new tilt-in-space wheelchairs.

These special wheelchairs help people with neurological conditions who are unable to balance when sitting in a standard armchair or wheelchair. This supportive equipment helps them to breathe more easily, strengthen their core muscles, have meals sat at a table, and spend time outside with the support of relatives and staff.

Michael Zaremba, Team Lead and Neuro Physiotherapist at Medway NHS Foundation Trust said: “We’re really pleased to have these tilt-in-space chairs, which will significantly enhance the quality of neurotherapy services we provide to our patients. Even a relatively small change like introducing this new equipment can make a meaningful difference to their comfort and care."

Best of luck to our Breast Care Unit Team who have been shortlisted in the ‘Performance Recovery’ category of this year’s HSJ Awards which takes place tonight.

The unit was the first in the region to adopt radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags for preoperative localisation of breast tumours back in 2024. As well as replacing same-day wire-guided localisation, it has helped to reduce patient anxiety, improved theatre capacity, and enhanced surgical precision.

Medway NHS Foundation Trust and Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust are coming together to form a hospital group - the first of its kind in Kent and Medway. The new partnership will have a shared Board, while both organisations will remain independent and continue to deliver high quality care for our communities.

Working as a group will help us build on our strengths, learn from each other and develop services to improve care for patients and support our staff.

This marks the beginning of a longer programme of work to strengthen services for the future - you can read more on our website:

To mark a total of 25 babies born before 30 weeks and cared for on The Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit in 2024 attended a special graduation ceremony on Saturday.
During the event, families received graduation certificates, shared their stories, and were reunited with the staff who supported them during their NICU journeys.
To help shine a light on the awareness day, and the impact of premature birth, our iconic clock tower will be illuminated in purple tonight so keep an eye out.
