💙💛 Happy ! 💛💙

Today, we’re proud to recognise World Down Syndrome Day, a global day that celebrates people with Down syndrome and encourages greater awareness, inclusion, and understanding.

📅 Why 21 March?

The date (21/03) represents the three copies of chromosome 21, which is what makes people with Down syndrome who they are.

This year’s theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” reminds us how important connection, community, and belonging are for everyone.

💬 Why this matters

Taking the time to learn more about Down syndrome helps create a more inclusive society, one where people feel respected, supported and able to live full and meaningful lives.

At DriveAbility Scotland, we see first-hand how the right support and opportunities can help people build confidence, maintain independence, and stay connected to the people and places that matter most - whether that’s through driving, mobility or everyday activities.

🧦 Get involved

You can show your support today by taking part in “Rock Your Socks” - wearing bright, bold or mismatched socks to celebrate difference and spark conversations about inclusion.

Let’s keep learning, listening, and supporting one another, not just today but every day.

💬 How are you marking World Down Syndrome Day this year?

At DriveAbility Scotland, moments like this remind us exactly why we do what we do! ❤️

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our amazing client, Sheree - a blogger, retired RN, musician, artist, gamer, and above all, a true MND Warrior!

Her courage, honesty, and determination continue to inspire everyone around her.

Sheree recently shared something deeply personal - a journey filled with uncertainty, resilience, and ultimately, hope:

“So I have been keeping something quiet for a while now… I didn’t want to have false hope… We are all different with different rates of progression.”

After stepping away from driving nearly five years ago, Sheree never imagined it would be possible again:

“I honestly did not think I would still be alive let alone still be able to drive a car after all of that time… I had given up HOPE.”

But hope has a way of finding its way back!

Following a consultant appointment that changed everything, and months of waiting, Sheree came to our team in Inverness for a driving assessment - and what happened next is exactly why awareness, support, and belief matter so much:

“The outcome was better than I expected and it honestly did not feel like I haven’t driven in five years!”

And the result?

🚗 FIT TO DRIVE - with a steering/control adaptation!

A life-changing moment.

Sheree’s story is not just about driving - it’s about reclaiming independence, rebuilding confidence, and refusing to give up:

“When I was diagnosed seven years ago my world fell apart… but I am and I’m so very grateful.”

We also stand with her in remembering the many lives touched and lost to MND:

“I don’t forget that many people… have lost their battle to this disease.”

Sheree, thank you for trusting us to be part of your journey. Your strength, positivity, and willingness to share your story are helping to raise awareness and inspire others facing similar challenges.

Your next steps?

✨ DVLA application

✨ New licence

✨ Car shopping!

We can’t wait to see where the road takes you next!

Driving independence forward - one journey at a time! 🚗

Since launching in 2021, DriveAbility Scotland has been on a mission to transform access to mobility across the country. Today, we’re proud to be Scotland’s only Driving Mobility accredited centre - and the only service actively supporting communities across the Highlands & Islands.

From clinically led fitness-to-drive assessments to mobility equipment, passenger access support, and driving lessons, everything we do is about one thing: helping people regain their freedom and confidence on the road.

Now, as an independent charity in our new, expanded headquarters, we’re ready to meet growing demand and reach even more people who need us most.

With support from the Motability Scheme, we’ve already strengthened our outreach in Inverness and Aberdeen - and we’re just getting started. Rural communities across Scotland are next.

We were honoured to welcome Gavin Thompson, COO at Motability Operations, to mark this milestone. His words say it best:

💬 “Hearing directly from drivers who’ve regained their independence really brings home why this work matters… these new facilities will make that possible for even more people.”

This is more than a service - it’s a lifeline to independence, opportunity, and connection.

And we’re only just getting started.

🌈 DriveAbility Scotland supports Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2026 (16-20 March)!

This week celebrates the many ways people think, learn and experience the world.

Neurodiversity recognises that neurological differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia are natural variations in how our brains work - and that different ways of thinking bring valuable strengths to our communities.

At DriveAbility Scotland, we see this every day through the journeys of the people we support.

Our specialist driving instructors work closely with occupational therapists to provide personalised driving assessments, lessons and theory test support.

By tailoring our approach to each learner’s strengths and needs, we help people build confidence, skills and independence - whether that means progressing towards a driving test, exploring adapted driving solutions, or building confidence behind the wheel.

For many people, learning to drive represents far more than simply operating a vehicle. It can open doors to employment, education, social opportunities and greater personal freedom. Through patient, specialist support and accessible learning environments, our team helps individuals take important steps towards greater independence and mobility.

Did you know? 🤔

Around 15-20% of people are neurodivergent, and creating environments where different thinking styles are understood and supported benefits everyone. When systems become more accessible, flexible and inclusive, more people are able to thrive.

At DriveAbility Scotland, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to explore independence, develop confidence and reach their potential. By providing specialist driving support and tailored assessments, we help people discover what is possible and move forward on their own journey.

Together, during Neurodiversity Celebration Week and beyond, let’s continue to understand, accept and celebrate neurodiversity!

💜 Happy International Women’s Day 2026 from DriveAbility Scotland! 💜

This International Women’s Day we’re celebrating 115 years of progress, resilience and collective action. Since 1911, International Women’s Day has been a global movement recognising the achievements of women while continuing the push toward a truly gender-equal world.

From the suffragettes of the early 1900s to the change-makers of today, every generation has carried the torch forward. But the work isn’t finished yet. Studies suggest that at our current pace, true gender parity could still be five generations away.

That’s why days like this matter.

At DriveAbility Scotland, we’re proud to work alongside talented, dedicated women who are helping people across Scotland gain confidence, independence and freedom through driving.

One of those inspiring voices is our Driving Advisor, Fiona McMeekin, who shared what International Women’s Day means to her:

🗣 “As a female driving instructor and now a Driving Advisor at DriveAbility Scotland, International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder of how far women have come - and how much further we can go.

Every day, I have the privilege of supporting individuals to gain confidence and independence through driving, challenging stereotypes about who belongs behind the wheel. Working within the driving industry, I'm proud to represent women in a field that has traditionally been male-dominated.

International Women’s Day celebrates resilience, empowerment and opportunity, and I'm honoured to play my part in helping others move forward - both on the road and in life.”

International Women’s Day is more than a celebration, it’s a reminder that progress happens when we support one another, challenge stereotypes, and create opportunities for everyone to thrive.

✨ Whether it’s mentoring, advocating, learning or celebrating the women around us, every action helps move us forward!

Happy International Women’s Day 2026 to all the incredible women making a difference every single day! 💜

It was a pleasure to welcome Mobility in Motion to our new facilities at DriveAbility Scotland in Glasgow recently, where we hosted two joint demonstrations for customers exploring vehicle adaptation solutions.

Working together, we showcased both a swivel seat solution and a wheelchair roof top box, helping customers and their families better understand the practical options available to support easier access and greater independence.

These collaborative sessions are invaluable, ensuring each individual can make informed decisions based on their specific needs and lifestyle.

A sincere thank you for supporting us and for being part of such positive and informative demonstrations. We’re proud of our new centre and look forward to continuing this important work together! 💙
