Anastasia McWilliams: Arts Psychotherapy / Dramatherapy

Anastasia McWilliams: Arts Psychotherapy / Dramatherapy -HCPC registered arts psychotherapist (dramatherapy / phototherapy)
-EMDR and DBR trauma therapist

I offer a creative, trauma-informed therapeutic approach that aims to support expression and exploration of life experiences, encourage positive change and improve emotional and psychological wellbeing.

Μy practice is informed by trauma-focused therapies (EMDR / DBR /narrative exposure therapy), psychodynamic psychotherapy, dramatherapy and phototherapy/therapeutic photography. I use a variety of methods to support individuals address and explore feelings, personal and emotional difficulties, relationship issues and trauma. These include talking therapy, trauma processing techniques, working with photographs, objects, masks, embodiment, role-play, story making and creative writing. The work encourages use of metaphor and symbolism to enable exploration and understanding of difficult issues at a distance. Arts psychotherapy interventions can mobilise imaginative resources leading to new skills, greater confidence and an ability to deal more effectively with situations arising in life; offer space for explorations of the role patterns we inhabit; encourage both verbal and non verbal
communication. Trauma focused therapies can target traumatic memories and allow the brain to reprocess the memories and any feelings and thoughts around them in a safe and supported space. This can lead to relief of symptoms, such as flashbacks and nightmares and reduction of
distress and anxiety. I am a qualified Arts and EMDR Therapist with over ten years professional experience practising in private practice, the NHS and the Third Sector, in Glasgow, Dundee and London. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and insured by the Psychologists Protection Society (PPS). I have specialised in Dramatherapy (MA, University of Roehampton, London) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) and I have undertaken addition training in
Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR), Therapeutic Photography (School of Applied Social Studies, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Centre of Therapy, Glasgow), Narrative Exposure Therapy and Mindfulness.

Following a successful HCPC validation process this year, we are delighted to announce that the first fully accredited, Masters-level Dramatherapy training programme in Scotland will be offered from the 2022-23 academic year. The programme will take place at Queen Margaret University (QMU) in Edinburgh, with which we have built a close relationship over the last three years, including offering an Introduction to Dramatherapy Short Course in 2019-20 (and again currently) as a way of building interest in the full programme.

This introductory course (4 x weekends over 4 months) was a development of three introductory courses offered at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (Glasgow) between 2018-2019. Several interested students have engaged in a number of these training opportunities and the full MSc programme is meeting a growing demand, noticed over a number of years, for an accredited programme in Scotland.

The MSc Dramatherapy will sit within the School of Health Sciences and will be offered as a pathway within a framework shared by Art Psychotherapy and Music Therapy. The programme will include shared modules with students from the above two courses, as part of integrated, interdisciplinary learning, while also maintaining the integrity of the experiential processes at the core of all Dramatherapy programmes. It will be offered as a 2-year, full time programme only initially, with applications now open for a first student intake in 2022/23. We hope that all BADth members may be able to support the promotion of this first Scotland-based programme in whatever way you can.
