It is likely that your fears in your thoughts about upsetting people might be based on your fears from as few as one or two experiences as a child where a significant someone (parent or carer) got upset at you, unjustifiably, and you made it mean you were the problem. Your protective mind made a rule to try harder to please others first to protect you from scary things. You are a big adult now. You can handle it now. That protective voice is the voice of a scared child.
