Knowing how to birth, knowing how we want to birth, and feeling confidence in our bodies is our birthright.

It’s not indulgent to learn about birth, and everyone should have access to quality, impartial education that arms them with all the information they need to make measured choices that work for them and their circumstances.

This is a knowing that is stored in our bodies, wisdom passed down by every birthing person in our lineage. It is knowledge that would have been shared between us as we birthed together, daughters supporting mothers, mothers supporting their children as they bear their own.

Learning about different birth options beforehand can mean that when you’re faced with decisions in the heat of the moment you are better able to make them - with all the facts and how you feel about them already considered.

Practicing positions and comfort measures with your birth team can mean there is a shorthand between you when words are not needed and you feel deeply supported.

We are passionate about people having all the information they need to birth on their terms - no matter how it all unfolds.

Is it labour or Braxton Hicks?

You’re approaching the end of your pregnancy and you’re feeling twinges - but is this it?

Did you know that some pregnant people experience ‘practice labour’ or Braxton Hicks contractions?

These tightenings of the uterus are irregular, don’t last and can often be soothed by changing activities or inviting in some calm vibes.

These practice contractions can feel like mild menstrual cramps and not everyone experiences them. Theywon’t dilate the cervix and can occur when you’re tired, need to p*e, have been really active or are thirsty, some people report Braxton Hicks related to drinking raspberry leaf tea (if this is you try dialing back how much you’re drinking!)

But they’re not just a pain in the bump - it’s thought they tone the uterus and promote blood flow to the placenta, prepping your body and baby for their big moment.

If the contractions continue, intensify and become more regular, then congrats! You’re going to meet your tiny human soon.

How do you know you're in labour?

If you're a fan of films and TV you'll probably be expecting a cascade of water and then a frantic rush to your birthing place BUT this isn't how it happens for the majority of pregnant people.

Here are some other signs that you'll be meeting your baby soon:

During pregnancy your cervix is protected by a build up of mucus, aka your mucus plug, which begins to come away as your body prepares for labour.

You could experience sustained back ache and a heavy feeling around your pelvis.

It's common to have diarrhoea or vomit in early labour as your body clears out anything it doesn't need so it can get focused on the job at hand.

Your contractions will get into a rhythm and become more intense over time.

Find yourself suddenly clearing out the kitchen cupboards or washing the windows? This might be the last burst of frantic getting your house in order before baby comes.

Learn more about the signs of labour and how to approach them at one of our upcoming workshops.

At Moon & Tide we are obsessed with oxytocin! It’s one of the coolest hormones when it comes to birthing, can be found in all mammals and other animals in the animal kingdom, we talk about it at length in all our workshops but here is just a few little oxytocin gems to wet your appetite!

At Moon& Tide we love education and are passionate about providing the information folk need to make informed decisions, but evidence-based info isn’t the whole picture!

We also believe in the inner knowledge a person brings with them to their pregnancy and birth, some folks call it intuition or inner knowing, that gut feeling you get about things, or leaning into feeling or following what your body needs.

This inner knowing is built from a lifetime of experiences, life events, and generational wisdom handed down and is totally unique to each individual, it makes us, us.

It can feel overwhelming at times to think about tapping into that knowledge, but no one knows your preferences, body and baby better than you!

Gut instincts sometimes get dismissed due to their lack of evidence but we must not forget that they are informed by evidence...just not the kind that can be tested in a lab! Your body is intimately connected to your baby and will be subconsciously monitoring for wellbeing all the time! We want you to feel empowered to speak up about that niggling doubt, or strong sense you get.

Practice in your pregnancy. Check in with your body when you are making a decision, how does it feel in your stomach? Does your heart rate or breathing change? Did you have an initial reaction that you have rationalised away? Maybe you even know clearly what you want but don’t say it for others comfort? Get curious! Get comfortable! Get confident!

And any health care professionals reading this? Get listening!
