Women in Construction Week (WIC Week) celebrates and promotes the role of women in the construction industry. It aligns closely with International Women's Day (8th of March), with each event designed to promote and celebrate the achievements of women, foster diversity and inclusion, and create opportunities for the next generation.

Our longest-standing female staff member is Zoe Jamieson (33), who has been our one and only administrator for over six years. A much-valued member of the Arc-Tech (Scotland) team, her role comes with a lot of responsibilities - and sometimes pressure - but she has always felt supported in what is an extremely fast-paced business.

"I’ve really enjoyed my time with Arc-Tech. Building Services is an exciting area of the construction industry, with constant opportunities to learn new skills and take on new challenges. Since joining Arc-Tech, I’ve completed training programmes in First Aid and Mental Health, and secured qualifications such as SVQ Procurement Level 3. These opportunities have helped me build my confidence and develop professionally

"With Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day, it’s a great opportunity to highlight the growing number of women entering the industry. My advice to any young woman considering a career in construction would be to go for it. Don’t be put off by stereotypes – if you’re willing to learn and step outside your comfort zone, there are so many pathways and opportunities to succeed."

The construction industry has often been viewed as one with barriers to female entrants. While it remains a male-dominated sector, times are changing. The industry is evolving, roles are diversifying, and those barriers are gradually receding.

With that, we are seeing more and more women enter our industry. CCG is proud to employ 68 women across a wide variety of roles, including Hanna and Iona, two of the three women who make up our four-person SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) team.

Hanna Muir (30 - left) began her career in construction as an apprentice plumber before ascending to her role as Senior HSE Advisor: "Starting my career in construction through an apprenticeship has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. When I first started on site in 2012, I was often the only woman there, but it’s encouraging to see more and more women joining the industry today. Construction has allowed me to learn, grow and build a career I’m really proud of, and I wouldn’t be where I am without the experience and support I gained through my apprenticeship."

Iona Boyd (27 - right) has worked for CCG for six years, advancing from contracts administration to the H&S team Assistant HSE Advisor: "From my experience working on site, I’ve seen a real effort across the industry to create a more inclusive environment - it’s encouraging to see positive change and more women choosing careers in the industry. Construction offers rewarding careers and fantastic opportunities, and my advice to anyone starting out is to believe in your abilities and not let self-doubt hold you back."

Yesterday, we broke the not-so-unexpected news that the CCG Group will once again be supporting youth employment in the Scottish construction industry by employing 14 new trade apprentices in 2026!

Traineeships and work placements will complement these industry-recognised apprenticeships for people in the communities within which they operate, but we also place a great deal of emphasis on developing from within.

Linda Ballantyne (35) was recently promoted to the title of Group Buying Manager. She is one of 68 women who form part of a wider 645-strong workforce and has advanced to her senior position through multiple promotions after joining the business as an assistant buyer in 2014.

She said: “I was drawn to construction because the outcome has a real-world impact. Procurement plays a critical role in ensuring projects remain within budget and run smoothly, and it always fills me with pride to see a completed development that my team and I have played a part in delivering.

“I’m grateful that my hard work has been recognised and for the trust that has been placed in me for this amazing opportunity. CCG is very supportive of women in construction, with clear progression pathways: a few years ago, I was the only woman in the buying team; however, as of today, there are now four women performing various roles.

“It is a testament to the business that it can attract new female entrants and evidence of how the industry is changing, and I am incredibly excited for what the future holds for me, my team, and all women in construction in the years ahead.”

It aligns closely with International Women's Day (8th of March), with each event designed to promote and celebrate the achievements of women, foster diversity and inclusion, and create opportunities for the next generation.

In the spirit of WIC Week, we thought we would introduce you to our two female staff, beginning with Megan, who joined the MU Team...earlier this week!!
Megan (27) from Coatbridge began her career as an apprentice project manager in telecoms, before quickly advancing into project coordination and project management roles.

“I’m really excited to be starting my new role as a Project Coordinator with Arc-Tech MU and to be taking the next step in my career within the utilities and construction sector. I’ve always been motivated by the opportunity to work on projects that have a real impact on communities, and this role gives me the chance to continue developing my skills while contributing to infrastructure that supports everyday life.

"With Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day approaching, it’s a great time to recognise the progress being made across the industry. While construction has traditionally been male-dominated, it’s encouraging to see more women stepping into technical, project, and leadership roles. I’m proud to be part of that change and hope it encourages more women to consider the wide range of opportunities our industry offers.”

Welcome to the team, Megan!

CCG Apprentices Then and Now: August 25 ➡️ March 26

Caden McCulloch (18) is thoroughly enjoying learning to become a qualified bricklayer, based at a large-scale residential development in Coatbridge, and describes his experience so far as “amazing”!

“I knew I didn’t want to work in an office because I like working with my hands. Since my first day onsite, the guys have been very welcoming and friendly, and I am really enjoying being part of a team. I think if anyone is considering an apprenticeship, they should go for it, as it has been an amazing experience.”
