We are a Social Enterprise that puts people before profit. We offer TCTSY (Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga) & Y12SR (Yoga of 12-Step Recovery).
We work with survivors of complex and/or relational trauma and individuals in recovery from addiction. What is Bikram Yoga? Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises practiced at temperatures of between 38 and 42 degrees. It is a 90-minute class, delivered by a certified Bikram teacher. The Bikram Yoga ‘dialogue’ is utilised by teachers to guide students through the practice, so that the instruction remains the same. Do I need to be flexible and fit to do it? The series we teach is Bikram’s beginning Yoga series, designed for new students and more experienced practitioners alike. Everyone works to their own level and capabilities. As long as you try the right way, you will improve and become stronger and more flexible. The first thing, as a new student is to simply get used to the heat. What if the heat is too much for me? Just sit down and breathe through your nose. The practice becomes cardiovascular and the heart rate increases. New students need to acclimatise to the heat and the best way is to take some time out. Stay in the room and join in with the postures again when you feel ready. Don’t worry; the teacher is here to look after you. What should I wear? As little as possible! The room is very warm, so shorts or leggings are best. Women can wear a cropped top or a sports top and men tend to wear shorts only. If you would prefer to dress more modestly, that is fine too. However, bear in mind that your clothes will likely be soaked through with sweat by the time the class is over! What do I need to bring? Apart from your yoga kit and dry clothes for after class, you will need water, a mat and bath-sized towel to cover your mat. If you don't have these or would prefer not to carry them, you can hire mat, towels and water from us for £1 per item.
**Y12SR - YOGA OF 12-STEP RECOVERY, SUNDAY 27TH, 5PM**
We're so proud of Andy! We met him through Phoenix rehab when he first came to the studio for weekly yoga. Now he's leading his first Y12SR class at the studio!
Join our Y12SR Leaders Andy Lannigan and Lianne Omara - who is also a certified yoga teacher - for a 90-minute session that includes a share followed by simple yoga moves.
ANDY'S AMAZING RECOVERY STORY
I was in addiction for 27 years before going into Phoenix in Feb 2018. I did 6 months in Phoenix and 9 months in re-entry. I kept up my yoga throughout, it helped me when I got my own home.
I started the 12 Steps and the yoga gave me a place to concentrate, where I could have self-care time. I had to look at stuff I never dealt with in rehab, like how I behaved towards other people. It was hard. It's easy to be angry, selfish and dishonest.
I believed I didn't deserve to get better. I didn't like myself. But that started to change. I understood empathy and compassion and being humble and selfless. I stared volunteering at Phoenix, which led to a job as a sessional worker since April 2020.
I showed commitment and was reliable and responsible. Then since November I started as a trainee recover worker. It's a full time post and the sessional worker is extra. I went from being homeless and addicted to having two jobs!
It's so cool to see people getting better and having played a part in that. I love what I do and am lucky to be doing something that I'm so passionate about because of the help I got from being a resident in Phoenix. The yoga played a big part too.
Anyone can recover. With patience and some work, you can recover. Thank you for the part you have played so positively in my recovery Lou, for 3 years and 4 months."
Aww, we L🥰VE you Andy! Show Andy some love by supporting him and Lianne's first yoga session on Sunday at 5pm! We are at 31 Crow Road in Partick. Y12SR is not hot yoga.
Y12SR - Yoga of 12-Step Recovery, Sunday 27th June, 5-6.30pm
We are delighted and excited to announce our Y12SR debut at our premises in Glasgow at 31 Crow Road, Partick. The session, which is donation based, just like Fellowship meetings, will be facilitated by Y12SR Leaders Lianne O'Mara and Andy Lannigan. It is a 'share', followed by simple yoga moves. All welcome!
“Hi! I'm Lianne and ever since I began playing with yoga over 20yrs ago my life has never been the same.
Stuck, tired, frustrated, unsure, angry, stiff, sore, nervous, scared? Your mat and your practice can move them all.
I have trained in Yin & vinyasa styles but also bring in aspects of Kundalini, Bikram and Kula, dependant on what is needed.
I quickly realised upon gaining my teaching qualification I wanted to serve those affected by addiction. This led to my gaining a yoga and the 12 steps (Y12SR) teacher training combing yoga with a 12 step meeting.
Having worked in pharmacy for 15yrs all over Scotland and England I saw that addiction is an often misunderstood and widespread affliction. I met individuals of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds that were fighting this battle with and without support.
I also had the privilege of working with the extended friends and families be it in pharmacy or volunteer work. They often felt just as harshly judged and faced a multitude of challenges around their loved ones addiction.
The opposite of addiction is connection and Yoga translates as union. Yoga and breath work are tools that afford space to come to terms with or change any given situation including addiction.
I discovered trauma featured heavily in many of the stories I was hearing and quickly became fascinated by connecting the dots. This has led me to embark on a trauma informed yoga (TCTSY) teacher training in September, having completed the introductory modules earlier this year.
Trauma is another affliction I feel very few of us have avoided and fewer still have the tools to navigate. TCTYSY is such a tool and I am hugely excited to learn more and share with those in need.
These classes are completely inclusive and there to support you anywhere along this journey.
*** Y12SR TASTER SESSION - SUNDAY MAY 23RD, HOT YOGA WEST END, 31 CROW ROAD, PARTICK, GLASGOW***
Want to try some yoga to deepen your recovery? The BodyMind Studio is delighted to be offering group classes at our premises in Partick from mid-May. Please join us to find out more about Y12SR - the Yoga of 12-Step Recovery. This session is for anyone dealing with their own addictive behaviours or affected by the addictive behaviours of someone else. All 'A's' are welcome!
Y12SR is a 45-minute 'share' followed by 45minutes of trauma sensitive yoga. The yoga involves simple movements (we wont be attempting this pose by our yogi superstar Andy Lannigan!) Absolutely all levels are welcomed, including those who may have lost limbs or have medical conditions. The taster session gives you the chance to ask questions and try 10 mins of yoga.
Our organisation is called the BodyMind Studio. We specialise in working with people in recovery from trauma and/or addiction. Our studio is called Hot Yoga West End because we offer Hot Bikram Yoga and Inferno Hot Pilates, but Y12SR is NOT hot yoga. Y12SR is perfect for those who have never tried yoga before.

Dr Lou Prendergast set up the BodyMind Studio within year of graduating from Bikram Yoga teacher training. It launched with a posture clinic in November 2016. Lou was on a mission from the beginning to make this incredible, life-changing yoga accessible to all people. In January 2017 the legal status of the organisation changed to Community Interest Company.
With this new Social Enterprise status, the BodyMind Studio has continued to work with regular, fee-paying students while also securing funding to work with disadvantaged individuals - whether they are in recovery from the trauma of addiction, or abuse, we know yoga is transformative while respecting that some yogis require a special teaching approach.
As well as continuing to guide students through passionate Bikram Yoga classes, Lou introduced Inferno Hot Pilates in 2018. This fun, genius little workout took the yogis into the realm of fitness. Students soon began to see the benefits of practicing both disciplines. Since the move to Charing Cross, the studio has benefited from two separate studio spaces.
Our downstairs space, ‘La Luna’ (the moon) is where students are able to drop into stillness through Yin Yoga poses. Upstairs in ‘El Sol’ (the sun) is where the sweat and intensity happens. The mirror is not only an aid for alignment, but teaches us acceptance; to love what we see. We watch beginners with eyes cast down eventually engaging with their reflection.
Always evolving a a teacher, Lou trained in Trauma Sensitive Yoga and Y12SR - the Yoga of 12-Step Recovery to be better equipped when teaching those in recovery from trauma and/or addiction. The BodyMind Studio CIC is grateful to have been supported by the Mungo Foundation; Big Lottery; Glasgow City Council; the Volant Trust and Comic Relief.
