Six Ayurveda Practises I wouldn't be without!
Lifestyle Medicine reminds us that health isn’t just about treatment; it’s about how we live — our food, our movement, our rest, nature, our connections and our joy.
Ancient science already knew this and Ayurveda is a path that treats you as the unique being you are.
Long before research papers and clinical trials, Ayurveda the 5,000 year old science was teaching that wellbeing is built in the rhythms of daily life — in how we eat, how we sleep, how we manage stress, and how we nourish our spirit. It’s the original Lifestyle Medicine, really — a guide to living with balance and vitality.
As someone who’s always been passionate about Ayurveda and joyful living, (without it I wouldn't be here writing to you back doing what I love I'm sure!)
I love seeing science and tradition finally dancing together - but I'd be lying if I didn't want you to go to the true source and check it out! If Lifestyle Medicine makes sense to you go deeper!
1. Sipping hot water in silence first thing
Every morning I sit quietly and sip plain hot water watching the birds. No phone, no planning, just warmth and stillness. Ayurveda says hot water stokes agni — your inner digestive fire — and helps clear ama (toxins). I used to be a four /five cup of coffee a day!! Science agrees: it supports circulation, hydration, and lymphatic flow. But honestly? It’s a mini meditation that starts my day grounded and grateful. And if I sleep in and have to jump on a zoom man do I miss it!
2. Yoga and meditation (and how I felt when I lost them)
Yoga and meditation aren’t optional for me — they fill my joy cup up. After spraining my ankle and missing my yoga practice for three months, I really felt it especially after such a nurturing time in Costa Rica. Coming back to my mat felt such a blessing. After three days getting back into it I was sleeping so much better too!
3. My morning kunyi — turmeric and ginger rice
Golden kunyi — basmati rice cooked with turmeric, ginger, and a drizzle of ghee — is my morning hug in a bowl. It’s gentle, anti-inflammatory, and deeply nourishing. Ayurveda says it’s perfect for digestion and grounding vata. I just know it makes me feel steady, soothed, and ready to meet the day.
4. Getting outside just before it gets dark
I actually get a little excited for that time after food, just before dark. There’s something magical about stepping outside as the light softens — it resets our circadian rhythm and signals to our bodies, “Ah, time to slow down.” Ayurveda calls this honouring dinacharya, nature’s daily rhythm. I sometimes manage up at 6am but I always manage to get outside before nightfall. We are a work in progress- right?
5. Living sattvic
Sattva means clarity, peace, and harmony — and it’s a daily practice. For me, it’s fresh food, clean spaces, oodles of silence ( I know that surprises a lot of people too) TV as a treat rather than a habit and getting to the park with the squirrels. It’s saying no when I need rest and yes to what feels aligned.
6. Chew, chew, chew (and my partner calls me Wolfie)
Yes, he does — because I eat too fast! It’s my lifelong lesson. But when I actually slow down and chew — really chew — how I enjoy. Ayurveda teaches that mindful eating builds ojas — our vital life energy. Wolfie’s still learning that one!
And on Sunday I received this wonderful google review from our phenomenal Shero Gail! She's one of our Joy Academy Clan and also taking up the option of one to one coaching too which is only available for our clan members..
"I have had quite an amazing result from our last session. I’m able to wait longer to take my pain meds and only taking half. It is amazing. I feel so good it was so healing to access the tears, sadness and pain that I keep locked away. I feel lighter inside.
So let’s keep feeling the feelings, filling our joy cups, one pause, one laugh and one chew at a time.
I’ll keep practising !
Wishing you a fabulous week
Much love Sharon xx
