The term perinatal depression encompasses a wide range of mood disorders that can affect a woman during pregnancy and after the birth of her child. It includes prenatal depression, the "baby blues," postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. Expecting/having a baby is a major event in a parent's life, which can lead to feelings of anxiety, fear and sometimes depression. Counselling can offer the opportunity for parents to understand their depression, to look at the changes in themselves and to find ways to help them cope in a safe, compassionate environment.
