Black Box Removal: What It Means for Women in the UK

There’s been a lot of discussion about this online, so here’s what it means for us in the UK 🇬🇧.

Big news from the U.S. 🇺🇸 this week is that the FDA has announced it’s removing the long-standing Black Box warnings from HRT.

It’s a huge step forward for women’s health there, finally reflecting what the evidence has shown for years- that
HRT is safe and effective for most women when prescribed appropriately.

Here in the UK, those warnings were never applied.
Our menopause care already follows trusted, evidence-based guidance from NICE and the British Menopause Society (BMS), with medicines regulated by the MHRA and approved for NHS use in Scotland by the SMC.

So while this update marks an important milestone in the U.S., it’s also a reassuring reminder that women here already benefit from modern, personalised, and well-regulated HRT treatment 💛

Brilliant day at the Scottish Pause Summit!

Such a brilliant day! Amazing speakers, real conversations and so much connection.

I was there to talk about Access and Choice in Menopause Care and how we can make care more personal, more flexible, and more supportive for every woman.

There was a definite buzz about the room… 😏

The theme this year for Menopause Awareness — Lifestyle Medicine in Menopause Care — really hit home. Small changes that not only help ease menopause symptoms, but support long-term health and wellbeing too.

Grateful, inspired and a wee bit tired. But what a day 💛

We don’t just want to live longer — we want to live longer in good health.

So what actually helps us do that?

Lifestyle medicine.

We talk a lot about HRT (and yes, it can be life-changing).
But menopause care isn’t just about hormones.

Lifestyle medicine is the foundation underneath it all — the 6 pillars that quietly shape how your body feels, functions, and ages through midlife and beyond.

🥦 Healthy eating – steady energy, balanced mood
💤 Restorative sleep – everything feels harder when you’re tired
💪 Physical activity – protecting strength, bone, and muscle
🧠 Mental wellbeing – supporting focus and calm
🤝 Healthy relationships – connection really does affect hormones
🚫 Reducing harmful substances – caffeine, alcohol, smoking – small tweaks, big results

This year’s IMS White Paper highlights lifestyle medicine as the theme for World Menopause Day 2025 — and it couldn’t be more relevant.

Because true menopause care goes far beyond prescriptions — it’s about building health that lasts 💛

💜 1 day to go 💜

Tomorrow is World Menopause Day, and this year’s theme is Lifestyle Medicine in Menopause Care.

I talk about this every single day in clinic — because it’s never just about hormones.

It’s about the things that hold everything else together:
🌿 Sleep
🍽️ Nutrition
💪 Movement
💬 Connection
☀️ Stress (or how we manage it)
🌱 Reducing harmful habits

These are the pillars that support real change.

Keep an eye out tomorrow — I’ll be sharing something special to celebrate 💛

This is my lifestyle medicine today.

Even the dog’s had enough. 💤

Some days you don’t need steps or structure — you just need a blanket, a film, and zero guilt!!!

Rest is medicine.
And if your body’s asking for it, that’s reason enough. 💛

For me, that’s the gym.
Turning up when I don’t feel like it — and let’s be honest, that’s most days in perimenopause 😩

What makes it easier?
Training with an amazing community of strong women (and men) who help each other push through — and a PT who doesn’t let me hide 😅. The dangling carrot of a coffee afterwards helps too! ☕️

I talk to my patients all the time about how important exercise is for managing menopause symptoms and supporting their long-term health.
It’s important I live that too.

That’s my self-care ❤️

If this kind of support feels different, that’s the point.

When a message like this lands in my inbox, it makes my day 😊

I opened Positive Change Health to give women care that actually listens,
the kind where you can talk honestly, ask questions and walk away feeling heard and helped.

It’s still clinical. I assess, prescribe, and plan with you - but it’s done with empathy, not hurry….. and even a cuppa if you want one ☕️😁

That balance of comfort and care?
That’s exactly what I’ve built here 🥰

Share this with someone who deserves care that truly listens, I’d love to be able to help 💛

I got tired of watching women get brushed off — so I built something different!

Hi, I’m Kate — the human behind Positive Change Health 👋

I’m a prescribing pharmacist, BMS-accredited in menopause care, and I help women get real answers about their hormones — without the brush-off.

I’m Liverpool born (Everton through and through 💙) but I’ve called Glasgow home since 2003.
Married, three kids, and one very cheeky Westie called Hamish.
Tea drinker, chatterbox, and lover of a good laugh.

After 20+ years in the NHS, I set up my own menopause clinic so women could finally feel heard, supported, and understood.

If you’re navigating menopause at any stage and want care that makes sense — and helps you feel like you again — you’re in the right place 💙

One minute you’re fine, the next someone’s breathing too loudly and the rage hits from nowhere. Then come the tears… or the embarrassment ☹️

You’re not going mad. But your hormones aren’t exactly helping.

When oestrogen levels fluctuate, they throw off serotonin — one of the brain chemicals that helps keep your mood steady.
Add in cortisol from stress, poor sleep, and life’s mental load and boom - emotional chaos!

What can help:
- Avoid ‘hanger’. Eat regularly + balance blood sugar, with real, nutritious food.
- Move — exercise is medicine for mood!
- Sleep (yes, sometimes easier said than done)
- Talk about it and get help — from your people or a professional who gets it (like me ❤️).
- Ease up on alcohol — it quietly makes everything worse

You’re not moody. You’re menopausal.
And you deserve understanding 💛
