Valentine’s Day is a reminder of the power of love, the kind we share, the kind we cherish, and the kind that stays with us always.

Today, many celebrate with cards and flowers, but it’s also a moment to reflect and remember those who are no longer with us. Love doesn’t end; it lives on in the stories we tell, the traditions we keep, and the moments that shape our lives.

If you’re remembering someone special today, we hope you feel surrounded by comfort, connection, and the enduring warmth of their love.

Wishing our community a peaceful and heartfelt Valentine’s Day.

Less is more.

Headstone space is limited to a few lines, and shorter epitaphs often work well. Typically, your message should include a name, birth and death date, accompanied by a simple personal message to reflect your loved one. Your message could include family relationships, a traditional phrase, or a faith based message. You could also include symbols, engraved images or photos, dependent on the restrictions of the church or burial ground.

Some examples are:

· In Loving Memory of
· Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather
· Till We Meet Again
· Now Protecting Us from Above
· In God's Care

You do not need to write a lot for your message to be meaningful. You can choose from different fonts and finishes such as gilding (gold leaf) and painting i.e. white, silver and black.

Our Funeral Home team can provide guidance and support you, ensuring the final inscription reflects the personality of your loved one.

This month we are exploring how to write a headstone inscription for your loved one.

Take your time.

The inscription on a headstone or memorial is a special and meaningful way to commemorate your loved one. Take your time when you decide on your wording, there’s no need to rush.

It takes several months to install a headstone or memorial after a funeral service, this gives you time to think, discuss with family and make a decision creating a lasting tribute that honours their memory.

Our Funeral Home team can provide guidance and support, ensuring the final inscription reflects the personality of your loved one.

Share this with someone that needs support.

Important points for guests.

Unlike traditional funerals, a celebration of life often has a more personal touch. Here’s what to keep in mind: Dress Code follow the family’s wishes. They may ask for bright colours or something that reflects their loved one’s personality. If nothing is specified, choose modest, respectful attire. What to Bring usually, there’s no expectation to bring anything. A thoughtful card, flowers (if appropriate), or a charity donation can be a kind gesture. Always check if the family has shared preferences.

Share a hug with family and friends.

Every year on the 21st January, we remind ourselves of the importance of physical touch and emotional connection. This can also be beneficial to those experiencing bereavement. The simple act of sharing a hug can have a profoundly positive impact on people with benefits to your health, stress reduction, feelings of happiness and sense of security.

Speaking at a celebration of life.

A celebration of life is a chance to share stories, memories, and love. If you’re asked to speak, here are a few tips:- Keep it personal - Share a favourite memory or share what made them special to you.- Stay positive - Focus on their life, achievements, and the joy they brought.- Be authentic - Speak from the heart; it doesn’t have to be perfect. Often, a celebrant or family member will lead the service, but many celebrations invite guests to share a story or tribute. Your words can help others heal and keep their memory alive.

Today is known as the ‘the saddest day of the year’. If you’re feeling low, you’re not alone. It’s normal to feel a dip financially, emotionally and physically after the holidays. Coping with low mood might be easier than you think. Connect with family and friends, get some gentle exercise, limit negative input and be kind to yourself. Remember, it’s okay to feel low sometimes, and small steps can make a big difference.

How to celebrate the life of a loved one.

A celebration of life is all about honouring your loved one in a way that feels personal and meaningful. It can be part of a non-religious funeral, or a separate memorial held days or weeks later. Here are some ideas to make it special:

-Choose a dress code that reflects their personality. This could be bright colours or their favourite shade.
Pick a unique venue or transport, like a VW campervan or a twilight service under fairy lights.
Share music, readings, and memories that celebrate who they were.
Add personal touches like a memory board or items that remind you of them.

To open the New Year, we will be exploring the concept of the ‘celebration of life’.

What is a Celebration of Life?

A celebration of life is a heartfelt way to honour someone who has passed by focusing on their legacy, joy, and the memories they’ve left behind. Unlike traditional funerals, these gatherings are often uplifting, encouraging family and friends to share stories and celebrate their loved one’s impact. It’s not just saying goodbye, it’s remembering how they lived and the love they gave.
