5 Simple Yet Effective Habits on How to Calm Your Nerves
“Motivation Is What Gets You Started. Habit Is What Keeps You Going.”
― Jim Ryun
It always starts with a slight tremble that is barely noticeable. As the pressure builds, you feel calmness flowing out the window as nervousness replaces it. Like the long lost friend, you do not want to meet; nervousness sticks to you and tries to butt in every situation.
You were looking forward to a presentation that you had been prepping for months but now that your old pal is back, things might not go the way you wanted.
Why is that?
“I should come up with an excuse and back down.”
Now, your self-esteem has taken a dive off the cliff and this thing has become your habit. You no longer challenge yourself because every time you feel even a little bit nervous, you back out and admit defeat.
A habit has now formed, which is affecting your professional life negatively. Why not create a few others that will impact your life positively?
Following are five habits that you should adopt to overcome nervousness:
1. Always Prepare Yourself
This point can’t be stressed enough! Going unprepared into anything will always throw you off the loop. You will be sloppy and make mistakes. Whether you are going in for a meeting or giving a presentation to the client, cover every angle. The client might ask you a random question and you will be just standing there, thinking of a reply. So, make sure that you have done your homework and even prepare on those things that are a long shot.
2. Be Realistic – What Can Go Wrong?
Want to calm yourself when you are in the moment? Ask yourself this: what’s the worst that can happen? You will immediately see that you are worrying about nothing. This also gives you the opportunity to prepare some more because now you know your trigger.
3. Visualise It
We always think about the negative and sometimes, it’s alright. But when it becomes habit, you sabotage everything all on your own. Here’s what you can do before you head into the meeting:
• Take a small break, close your eyes and lay your head back
• Visualise the situation unfolding and try to steer it to the positive side
If you picture your desired result, you will feel more light and confidence, as you will present to the client.
4. Take Deep Breaths before the Meeting
Is your heart beating as you are heading towards the meeting room? Walk slowly and stop just a few steps away from the door. Take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it for 5 seconds and exhale through your mouth. This small breathing exercise will not just calm down your nerves but will also give you the confidence to present with all your senses.
5. Don’t Pay Attention to What People Think About You
Easily said than done, right? But really, think about it... if you stop caring about what people say, you will automatically feel free. People already have enough on their plate and contrary to what you believe, people don’t dwell on what other are d
