This week we are thinking about sharing stories! 2026 is the National Year of Reading and this Thursday is World Book Day!

Did you know: children are more likely to enjoy reading if their parents or carers do too? By sharing books and stories, you are creating the next generation of readers and storytellers!

Communication is not a reward.
It’s not something to earn.
And it’s not dependent on speech.
Communication is a basic human right.

Every person deserves access to tools, supports, and partners who honor their voice—whether that voice comes through words, AAC, gestures, movement, or behavior.

When we presume competence and provide access, we don’t just teach skills—we uphold dignity.

💬 Let me ask you:
What’s one way you support communication access in your classroom or home?

Children with Selective Mutism can be some of the loudest and most confident children at home or in situations they feel comfortable!

This is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear & it drives me mad!!! 🫣🤯

Yes, a child with Selective Mutism may look shy in some situations - but that’s not the whole picture.

👉 The truth is, Selective Mutism is situation-specific.

At home, with close family, they might be the most confident, loud, and animated child you know! 🤩

We have seen many children with Selective Mutism when they're comfortable and they are often the opposite to shy! 😃

Parents even tell us "you are going to think I've been making the SM up!!" but no, we understand.

Some children we've come across at Confident Children are actually born entertainers! Clearly born for the stage! 🎬📽️😃

No, they’re not shy - anxiety is holding them back in specific situations.

And when we understand that, we can help them in the right way...& with time their true self might shine through 🥰

You’ll find lots of free resources on the Confident Children website to help support children with Selective Mutism - link in the comments 😃

If a child isn’t learning the way we teach, it’s not a failure—it’s information.

This quote reminds us to pause and shift the approach instead of the child.
Different learners need different paths, tools, and pacing—and that’s something to honor.

💬 Let me ask you this:
How have you changed your teaching to better support the way a student learns?

Sometimes the smallest shifts make the biggest difference 🤍

Visual Timetables are great for children and young people to support their day to be predictable. Sometimes I also need a written timetable to plan out my day.

It doesn’t need to be fancy - just open your notes page and write out your plan! 📋

Non-speaking does not mean non-thinking.

And it definitely doesn’t mean non-communicating.

Some people communicate with words.

Others use AAC, gestures, scripts, movement, or behavior.

All of it is communication.

When we shift our mindset, we stop asking “Why aren’t they talking?”

And start asking “How can I better listen and support their communication?”

Every voice deserves access.

Every communicator deserves respect.

Save this as a reminder—and share it with someone who needs to hear it 🤍
