'I'm not feeling so good and I'd like to talk to you about it'

EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS WEEK 2026

It's Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2026 this week and it's a time to not only reflect on the experiences of people with eating disorders and how treatment and support has changed over the past 24 years I have been involved with eating disorders: but it's also a time to raise awareness in our communities, have conversations with each other and reach out to those who are facing a difficult time with their relationship with food, eating, and their bodies.

We are busy working on a new project at the moment which we hope to launch at the end of the year. We're also re-branding and changing our websites; so, unfortunately, this EDAW26, we haven't had the time and space to do our usual things to mark the week.

However, we're still having conversations this week, talking about eating disorders and supporting many people across the UK with eating disorders, disordered eating and body image concerns, through psychotherapy, counselling and dietetics.

Our clients are of all ages, backgrounds, locations, occupations and, cultures and not everyone's eating disorder is the same. We work with people experiencing a range of eating disorders and disordered eating. Regardless of whether they have a 'formal' diagnosis or not; or have been experiencing difficulties for 12 months or 12 years; or fit neatly into a 'type' of eating disorder, we are here to support them.

Eating disorders come in all forms and we aim to tailor our support as much as possible to each individual client according to where they are at this time. We adapy therapy as needed, go at your pace and work with you on a personal and individual level - exactly what is needed in eating disorder treatment.

You are not alone. Our experienced, supportive, patient and understanding therapists and dietitians are here to support you. We know it's often difficult to take that first step. We never underestimate that. If the first step is just sending us an email to say 'hello' then it's a start and we can take things from there.

So, this Eating Disorders Awareness Week, reach out to someone- whether it's a therapist, a family member, a friend, a colleague, on a forum, on the phone, in an email - whatever the case may be - reach out to someone in the community. It can feel a whole lot better just to say to someone, 'I'm not feeling so good and I'd like to talk to you about it'

We're here too and you're welcome to get in touch, whether that's during EDAW26, next month or next year. Our contact details are below.

Take care and we looking forward to chatting soon.

Best wishes,

The Team at Talking EDs: Eating Disorders Support Service Scotland

We love this visual metaphor of psychotherapy and counselling. If the therapist and client work together, in collaboration, with trust, safety and patience, and the client makes the commitment to attend sessions, do the work (even when it's tricky at times) and commit to change, even when change might be difficult, this picture is what can happen and life can truly change, for the better, for you.

Sometimes things are better said with pictures. This picture is a great example of that.

If you want to wake up in the morning feeling motivated, de-stressed and looking ahead again, if you want to start living life again, if you want start making change and leaving behind the things that don't work for you anymore, then get in touch with us to find out how we can support you with this.

We offer in-person appointments in Glasgow city centre, online appointments to anyone across the UK and appointments can be weekly or fortnightly. We even have some discounted appointments with our newly qualified therapist.

Get in touch now to find out more and to start making your life a wee bit better.

URGE SURFING STRATEGY

One of the things that clients might try out in therapy, especially if they are experiencing binge eating, emotional eating, exercise compulsions or compulsions related to body image is Urge Surfing.

Urge surfing can be used for many things including distress intolerance; self-harm; addictions and binge-eating, emotional eating, exercise compulsions, compulsions related to body image , cravings and over-eating.

Often, when a craving or urge or compulsion for food/to eat/to check/to exercise hits us, we think we only have 2 options available to us:

1. We give into the urge/craving/compulsions and/or;
2. We resist.

Meditation and mindfulness opens the door to a third option called 'urge surfing'.

See the poster below for some brief 'facts' on 'urge surfing'.

Why not try this for yourself and see if it's something th at might help alleviate the distress of cravings and urges, even a little. It can help you claw control back too, rather than food, eating, exercise and/or body image thoughts, feelings and behaviours controlling you.

We see you. We see your anxiety. And your anxiety sees you.

You wake up already scanning the day for danger. Your chest tightens before your feet even touch the floor. You rehearse conversations in your head, just in case. You feel like you’re constantly walking a mental tightrope—one wrong thought and everything could unravel.

You smile, you function, you show up. But inside, it’s chaos. The “what ifs” never stop. The fear of being judged, misunderstood, or not enough—it’s exhausting. And the worst part? You feel like you should be able to “just get over it.”

But anxiety isn’t weakness. It’s your nervous system trying to protect you, even when there’s no real threat. It’s your mind doing overtime, trying to control the uncontrollable.

💬 Now, imagine this…

You sit in a room with someone who doesn’t rush you, doesn’t judge you, and doesn’t try to fix you. They listen. They help you untangle the knots in your thoughts. They teach you how to breathe again—not just with your lungs, but with your whole being.
Therapy isn’t about being broken. It’s about understanding your patterns, your triggers, and your story. It’s about learning how to respond to anxiety instead of being ruled by it.

Here’s what therapy can offer you:

🛠️ Tools to calm your nervous system when it’s in overdrive
🧩 Clarity around your thoughts so they stop feeling like a tangled mess
🗣️ A safe space to say the things you’ve never said out loud
🧠 Techniques to challenge anxious thinking and build new mental habits
💪 Confidence to face situations you used to avoid
🌱 A deeper understanding of yourself and why you feel the way you do
🤝 Support from someone who’s trained to walk beside you through the storm

Therapy can help you turn down the volume of fear. It can help you build a life that feels less like survival and more like living.

So, if your inner world feels heavy, chaotic, or loud—know this: healing is possible. Change is possible. Feeling better is possible. Getting on in life is possible. And you deserve it.

🕊️ You don’t have to carry this alone anymore.

👉 If this post speaks to you, reach out. Get in touch and take that brave first step and look into therapy. You’re not weak for needing help—you’re strong for wanting change. Let’s talk. Let’s change.
Let’s make life better again. You’re not alone.

Our email and website are in the comments below. We can offer in-person appointments at our centre in Glasgow city centre or online appointments to anyone across the UK. Hybrid appointments are also possible with some of our therapists.

We work with people of all ages, all genders, all nationalities, with a wide range of jobs and from all over the UK. So, you're not alone.

Anxiety, stress, depression, grief, panic, trauma, work stress, body image, worry, difficult relationships, low self-esteem and self-worth distress and many other problems and concerns do not discrimiate - anyone can find themselves in a place where the don't feel good about themselves, or their thoughts, or their feelings, or their memories or their lives.

And, we could all do with a wee bit of help and support sometimes, couldn't we? It's time to take time out for you.
