We know parents want the best for their children when they’re hurt or feeling unwell.

That’s why healthcare professionals at Vale of Leven Hospital are reminding families to call NHS 24 on 111 or visit their local GP, pharmacy, or dentist before attending.

The Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) can treat cuts, sprains, minor burns and fractures — but not babies under 12 months, and not children with illnesses like fever, vomiting, infections or breathing issues.

Winter will likely be the busiest time of year for our health services. Around 2 out of 3 people will visit A&E when they could be treated elsewhere.

Before you head to an Emergency Department, think ABC:

🤔 A – Ask yourself: Can I manage this at home? Visit NHS Inform for trusted advice.

👁️ B – Be aware: Your local pharmacist, GP, dentist or optometrist can help with many conditions.

📲 C – Call 111: If it’s urgent or you’re unsure, NHS 24 will guide you to the right care.

Get the right care, in the right place. For more info, visit: https://www.nhsggc.scot/nhsggc-launches-winter-campaign-and-its-as-easy-as-abc/

Did you know that...

🚨 In just 4 weeks last year, 46 people across Scotland were treated for firework injuries.
🔴 Over 37% of those were in our region.
🧑‍⚕️ Nearly half needed plastic surgery or specialist care.
🚑 More firework injuries take place in the fortnight AFTER Bonfire Night - so keep your leftover fireworks away from children.

As Bonfire Night approaches (5th Nov) the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are urging families to stay safe. Sharon Ramsay, Clinical Nurse Specialist for Paediatric Burns at the Scottish National Burns Centre, based at the RHC explains below. Scott McAdam, now 17, was diagnosed with a hearing loss following his newborn screening test at just a day old. At 12 weeks old, he was fitted with hearing aids after a follow-up found he had bilateral profound hearing loss.

As we celebrate 20 years of newborn hearing screening this week, Scott's mum, Marion, thanks NHSGGC staff for their care for Scott over the years and the Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity for their support, helping keeping Scott entertained during many hospital visits over the years. 🙌

If you've had a baby at one of our Glasgow and Clyde hospitals, chances are you've met one of our newborn screening team. Today, they celebrated 20 years of the NHSGGC Newborn Screening Programme, a milestone in early detection and intervention for childhood hearing loss. Together, they've screened over 250,000 babies.

NHSGGC Head of Audiology for Paediatrics, Jim Harrigan said:

“The earlier a child can be diagnosed with a hearing issue, the sooner we can provide interventions medically and socially to support them. This means that children diagnosed with hearing challenges and deafness will have the best foot forward for developing speech and interaction with others.

“It was a privilege to welcome current and former team members to today’s celebration. Looking back over the past 20 years, it’s remarkable to see the difference we’ve made in so many children’s lives. Thank you to the team for their dedication.”

Our A&E departments are currently busier than normal, so we are asking people to think carefully about accessing care that is appropriate to their needs.

If you have a minor injury or illness, please don't visit A&E. There are other paths to care available for you, and these will avoid a lengthy wait. Unless it’s an emergency, think ABC before going to A&E.

Ask yourself: Do I need to go out? For information on keeping yourself well and treating minor illnesses and injuries from home, go to NHS Inform or download the NHS24 app.

Be aware: There is help for many conditions right on your doorstep. Your local GP, pharmacy, dentist, or optician offers a range of services.

Call 111: If it’s urgent, or you’re not sure, call NHS 24 on 111. They’ll make sure you get the help you need.
