1. St Valentine is the Patron saint of love, young people, beekeepers, epilepsy, fainting, plague & more..
2. Legend says that using the phrase " from your Valentine" came from him signing off letters to a woman he befriended and had cured her blindness.
3. His remains are scattered cross Europe, including in our very own John Dun Scotus here in the Gorbals, Glasgow.
4. Wales actually celebrate their very own version of Valentines on the 25th of January - St Dwynwen's day! St Dwynwen was a Welsh Princess who became a nun and prayed for others to have more luck in their romantic fortunes than she had.
5. Valentine sacrificed himself for love, helping Christian couples marry in secret. Emperor Claudius II had him executed for this.
6. To celebrate Valentines day, it was estimated in 2019 Β£855m was spent on and for valentines day.
7. Valentines day as a "lovers festival" dates back to the 14th century & the tradition of giving cards from the 18th Century.
8. St Valentine had the power of healing and amongst other things he is the patron saint of Healing.
9. He was martyred on the 14th of February which became is Saints day and observed as his feast day.
10.Pope Gregory XVI gifted Carmelite priest John Spratt, a small vessel tinged with St Valentines Blood. This was taken to the white friar street Carmelite church in Dublin where it remains today. Many pilgrimage here, especially those seeking love!
