Florence Nightingale wrote, “Apprehension, uncertainty, waiting, expectation, fear of surprise, do a patient more harm than any exertion.” Nightingale recognised that reassurance and composure could support recovery. This was an early understanding of what we now call psychosocial wellbeing.
Wellbeing outdoors also depends on safety. Clear communication, a steady presence, and practical preparation help people stay composed when things go wrong. Reassurance belongs at the heart of first aid.
