How much should we aim to exercise?

Adults should do some type of physical activity every day. This can reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke amongst other diseases.

Adults should aim to:
* do strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms) on at least 2 days a week
* do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week
* spread exercise evenly over 4 to 5 days a week, or every day
* reduce time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity
You can also achieve your weekly activity target with:
* several short sessions of very vigorous intensity activity
* a mix of moderate, vigorous and very vigorous intensity activity

Moderate activity will raise your heart rate, and make you breathe faster and feel warmer. One way to tell if you're working at a moderate intensity level is if you can still talk, but not sing.

Vigorous intensity activity makes you breathe hard and fast. If you're working at this level, you will not be able to say more than a few words without pausing for breath.

🙋‍♀️Chronic shoulder pain is highly prevalent & a common reason for referral to physiotherapy.

🏋️A recent meta-analysis has shown how exercise therapy provides significant pain relief.

🙌🏻Shoulder-specific strengthening along with scapular exercises and range of motion exercises are more effective in providing pain relief for chronic shoulder pain than usual medical care!

🦶Over 70% of ankle sprains can develop into chronic ankle instability…but rehab can help to prevent this & improve outcomes!

⚖️ Evidence highlights that balance training enhances:
😀daily activity capability
🗒️functional scale scores
🏃‍♀️motor function
🕺and dynamic balance

🙌🏻 Rock pods work! 🙌🏻 A recent study focused on the acute effects of dry cupping therapy on U-19 football players, specifically looking at hamstring flexibility, jumps, strength, and range of movement. Dry cupping therapy showed a statistically significant positive effect on hamstring flexibility, as well as knee and hip movement. This highlights that cupping can be a useful, non-invasive method to improve these parameters, amongst other treatments.

“Running damages your joints”…..🏃‍♀️🏃🏻

I hear this often! But here’s what the evidence actually shows… 🧐

🏃‍♂️Does running cause arthritis? NO!!! in some cases it may actually reduce the effects! 🙌🏻

🏃Recreational runners have LOWER rates of hip and knee osteoarthritis than people who don’t run. (JOSPT, 2017)
🏃‍♂️Some research suggests that cartilage may be "conditioned" by regular, progressive loading from running
🫣However, "excessive" cumulative volume could be detrimental. This tends to be at an elite, high volume level.

❤️Running IMPROVES cartilage nutrition, STRENGTHENS bone, INCREASES muscle capacity, and SUPPORTS healthy body weight. Joints like MOVEMENT. They dislike inactivity.

🏃🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️KEEP RUNNING!! 🏃 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️
