Each winter healthcare services see an increase in vulnerable people seeking support because they are lonely.

The darker nights and adverse weather can make people worried about leaving their home, this can lead to mental health struggles and social isolation.

We also know that those who care for others may need extra support during the winter months, to stay well themselves and to make use of support networks for carers if needed.

We are encouraging members of our communities in Gloucestershire to keep a friendly eye on their older friends, family, and neighbours this winter. Small gestures can have a huge impact on people’s wellbeing. If you are able to, pop in and check on them, ask them if they are warm enough and have enough basic supplies.

Living in a cold or damp home can have a big impact on your health.

Some health problems can get worse in cold weather so it’s important to keep your home warm.Heating your home to a steady, comfortable temperature is best for your health. If you are older or have a health condition, try to heat your home to a minimum of 18C.Many people are worried about being able to afford to heat their home with the rising cost of fuel. Support is available if you are struggling to heat your home this winter.

Gloucestershire Libraries will be offering a free, warm and welcoming spaces in local communities across the county this winter as part of the Warm and Welcome scheme. There are also several organisations who can offer practical help if you are struggling to stay warm this winter.

Some people struggle in the winter due to the lack of sunlight.

Shorter days, darker nights and more time indoors can affect our mood and make us feel low. Getting the right amount of Vitamin D is important for boosting our mood so making the most of sunlight can have a positive impact on our wellbeing.

It’s important that you look after your mental health and wellbeing over the winter months. Connecting with others in different ways can lift our mood and combat loneliness and reaching out for support is often the first step towards getting and staying well.

Starting to feel unwell? Seek advice as soon as you start to feel unwell

This is particularly important if you have a long-term health condition. Your community pharmacy is a great first port of call for advice about looking after yourself at home.

As qualified healthcare professionals, Pharmacists can also offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, tummy trouble and aches and pains. They can suggest tips on managing your symptoms and ways to reduce the risk of some illnesses getting worse.

If you have an illness that won’t go away, and is not responding to self-care or advice from your pharmacy, you are advised to contact your GP surgery through their website, the NHS App or by phone. Working together, many GP surgeries are now offering appointments in the evenings and on Saturdays.

The Gloucester Health Access Centre (GL1 2TZ) is also open, 7 days a week. The Centre provides a range of GP care. Ring in advance on 01452 336290 to get an appointment time convenient to you.

If you think you may need A&E or to get the right service 24/7, click 111.nhs.uk or call 111. 111 can advise on illness and injury. The 111 phone service can book you into local NHS services e.g. GP surgery, Community Minor Injury and Illness Unit or A&E if needed.
