The darker evenings have always hit me hard.
Less light. Less energy. More pressure.
And before I know it, I’m standing in the kitchen, looking for something to take the edge off.
For years I thought that meant I had no willpower.
Now I know it’s just my body and brain looking for comfort - for a bit of calm in the chaos.
So this winter, instead of restriction, I’m focusing on regulation.
Here’s what’s been helping me lately 👇
🌤️ getting as much daylight in my eyes as possible (even a few minutes helps)
🍳 regular fuelling — especially breakfast
🚶♀️ early movement — I never feel like going out in the evenings
🍲 taking the pressure off dinner — some nights are big family meals, others are soup & toastie or picky-plate nights
📅 holding my boundaries and not overloading my diary
🛒 booking the same food delivery slot each week — one less decision to make
⏸️ and building in the pause before snacking — that tiny moment to check in with myself before reaching for food
Sometimes I still eat the snack — and that’s okay.
But pausing helps me notice what I actually need: light, rest, warmth, or a bit of breathing space.
You’re not lacking discipline if you’re craving comfort right now.
You’re just human — and your body’s trying to find balance in the dark. 💛
