SKCIN is proud to share new evidence published in the British Journal of Dermatology examining the impact of Skcinโs free, national Sun Safe Schools accreditation programme โ the first study of its kind in England.
The research, co-authored by Skcinโs CEO Marie Tudor, analysed extensive data from our programme of over 10 years, demonstrating its reach, engagement and success in embedding vital sun safety education across UK schools.
The findings reinforce what Skcin has championed for over a decade โ that early education is key to shaping lifelong sun-safe behaviours and reducing future rates of skin cancer.
Since 2012, Sun Safe Schools has provided an effective, robust solution for primary settings with Skcin proudly securing sun safety education onto the national PSHE curriculum in 2020.
Evidence shows that effective health interventions rely on consistent, age-appropriate messaging delivered regularly over time, supported by environments that model and reinforce the desired behaviours. The structured, developmental design of the Sun Safe Schools programme directly addresses this need, underpinned by its four-step framework.
Since the research was undertaken in 2023, Skcin are proud that this effective intervention reached a landmark in 2025 โ engaging over one million school children across the UK.
โWe are delighted to see this research published,โ says Marie Tudor, CEO of Skcin. โWe have long known that engaging children early is crucial to tackling this public health concern and protecting future generations. Skcin will continue to work with schools, Government and their 10-year cancer plan, to drive preventative solutions and create lasting impact for future generations.โ
We are extremely grateful to lead author Dr. Jilse Joshy and all co-authors whose expertise and dedication made this research possible.
