The amount of pain you feel does not correlate to MRI findings or X-rays. You cannot see pain! Many people have damage but do not have symptoms- other tests come back clear yet the person is in severe pain!

There has been lots of exciting things brewing behind the scenes. I didn’t know where to start!
Let’s kick off and talk about Rie Pearson- from Be Kind no excuses charity. She runs a charity educating teenagers and young people about abusive relationships. Many women that experience abuse develop chronic pain, autoimmune diseases or Fibromyalgia As a retired Police Officer she has seen first hand what is needed. I was lucky enough to meet here during WOWOW this January. Today we had a virtual meet up and I am very excited to meet her at her summer event! (More later)

This seems so innocent- but this casual remark changes your brain chemistry and sets off a chain reaction- one that keeps you in the chronic pain loop. This isn’t about shame- it’s about awareness! Mind your language- change your words you change your brain!

This week nearly all of my Chronic Pain clients had their physical pain activated by rejection. Why? Because the same brain centres that deal with rejection give emotional context to pain or as with the Amydyla “sound the alarm” indeed social rejection had an impact on survival thousands of years ago and that loss of connection and isolation may have had repercussions for our physical survival. A nervous system that is out of balance will interpret this as a threat to life- thus overactivating the threat systems and producing pain even without injury. As a trauma informed Chronic Pain specialist I help people recognise the events from the past that echo in the nervous system that laid the foundations for Chronic pain. When they make sense of why the nervous system is reacting and predicting in this way we can rewrite the old information and update the prediction.

When I help patients work out why the brain is predicting pain (hint it usually is nothing to do with the actual pain) we can start to untangle and rewrite the pathways that got them there. Probably the most satisfying work I’ve done in 38 years !

Some good news to share… the photo is last years trophy. I have for the second year been recognised for my innovative work with Chronic Pain. To win this once was wonderful- twice feels surreal!

It’s Friday… and I have burning questions which of course have nothing to do with anything!
