Psychological Therapy for Couples

Psychological therapy helps couples to recognise and resolve conflicts in order to help improve their relationships. The aim is to gain new perspectives about each other, the way we relate, and learn new ways of being together. It includes skills based techniques to help couples become more proactive, as well as exploring feelings and thoughts with partners in order to strengthen the bond.

If underlying mental health or psychological difficulties have not emerged prior to this age, then they are sure to make an appearance at this challenging life stage, affecting both Teenager and Young Adults. Aside from the enormous physical and endocrinal changes the teenager experiences, difficulties with wider relationships in the community, with work or in romantic relationships come into focus with difficulties that can include; relationships and sexual difficulties, body image, gender dysphoria, personality difficulties, mood and emotional difficulties, self-harm, and substance misuse. Risk and safeguarding become more of an issue as this age group may fall between the net of children’s and adult services.

Amongst girls aged between 17 and 19, one in four have a probable mental health condition (The Health Foundation, 2022)

Eye Movement De-Sensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that has been shown to be highly effective in treating a range of mental health issues, particularly those related to trauma. This therapy works by allowing individuals to process traumatic memories in a safe and controlled manner, helping them to reprocess these memories in a way that reduces their emotional impact and allows for healing to take place.

EMDR was first developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. Shapiro discovered the therapeutic benefits of eye movements when she noticed that certain eye movements reduced the emotional intensity of her own disturbing thoughts. This led her to develop a technique that involved guiding patients to move their eyes from side to side while simultaneously recalling traumatic memories. Over several years, Shapiro refined this technique and developed a structured protocol that has since been widely adopted and recognised as an effective therapy for trauma-related issues.

Problems that arise during infancy and early childhood may be indicative of underlying conditions or emerging pathologies. Challenges or delays in developmental milestones are of note, as well as any difficulties associated with feeding, sleeping, toileting, attachments, trauma, intellectual and neuro difficulties, and general behavioural or conduct problems.

Assessment and intervention at this stage is primarily conducted via observation and with the caregiver given this early stage in development. Typical problems encountered during the assessment process include social and communication difficulties, educational attainment challenges, and attachment and separation anxieties for example.

How to Survive Christmas Period If You Have No One To Spend it With

Christmas might be the most wonderful time of the year to some but to others, it feels more isolating than ever. Here’s how to enjoy Christmas on your own.

1. Stay away from social media

One of the worst parts of being alone for Christmas is being bombarded with other people’s photos on social media and commercials depicting happy families. If you want to avoid feeling isolated, consider doing a digital detox this month.

2. Meet people online

If you can’t stay away from the Internet, you can at least put it to good use and connect with other people who are spending Christmas alone. Thanks to how developed our technology is, you can now have an online Christmas party with people based all over the world. All you have to do is join a relevant Facebook group or Reddit thread.

3. Volunteer

The Christmas period is the busiest time of the year and many businesses will struggle to keep up. If you need a distraction, consider helping out at a local store, or give back to the community by volunteering at a care home. Volunteering can help you create a sense of purpose and keep you busy.

4. Go traveling

If you’re dreading the Christmas period, consider visiting a new place. Travelling can make your heart full whenever you’re feeling down; exploring new cultures and meeting like-minded people is a great way to decrease loneliness and replace anxiety with excitement.

5. Be productive

When you have no family to cook for and no gifts to hunt for it gives you more time to focus on yourself. Think about how you can take advantage of having extra free time and use it to declutter your space, take up a new hobby or finish projects you’ve been working on.

6. Pamper yourself

When you’re at your most vulnerable, it’s always a good idea to treat yourself with extra kindness. Make sure you do something you enjoy every day and pay attention to your well-being; if you notice that your mental health is deteriorating, don’t be afraid to seek help.

Exposure Therapy (ET) is a widely recognised and effective psychological treatment for anxiety disorders. It is a form of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) that aims to reduce anxiety and fear responses by gradually exposing individuals to the situations or stimuli that trigger their distress. The therapy helps individuals confront their fears in a safe and controlled environment, allowing them to learn healthier copier mechanisms. The primary goal is to reduce fear responses by facilitating the process of habituation and de-sensitisation.

Relationships Concerns That Women Have And What It Means

“The best thing to hold onto in life is each other”- Audrey Hepburn

Intimate relationships are hard. Moreso, for the women involved.

It is true that while there is an emphasis in recent times on the role of men in relationships, such as the Men’s Relationship Programme in the UK, Australia and Canada, it should come as no surprise that for women, intimate relationships are more complicated.

Why? Women are seen inherently as caregivers, to children and to their partner, with as many as 58% stating that they see themselves as the primary carer to children (Gallup Poll 2024). Also, with modern economic pressures, many women now wear more hats than ever before, having to juggle their home life, their childcare roles, their jobs and intimacy in relationships all at the same time.
