Aversion Therapy is a psychological treatment technique that aims to modify undesirable behaviours by associating them with unpleasant stimuli.

Aversion Therapy is a form of behaviour therapy that utilises conditioning principles to discourage individuals from engaging in specific behaviours or habits. It involves pairing the targeted behaviour with an unpleasant stimulus (such as an electric shock or a foul smell), creating a negative association that can lead to a reduction or cessation of the behaviour.

What is Habit Formation Therapy?
Habit Formation Therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on helping individuals develop positive habits and break negative ones. It involves identifying triggers and patterns associated with habits, understanding the underlying reasons for these behaviours, and implementing strategies to change them. It is based on the understanding the habits are behaviours that are formed through repetition and reinforcement, and that they can be difficult to change without intentional effort and support.

The concept of Habit Formation Therapy can be traced back to various psychological theories and practices, but the specific origins are not well documented despite being explored by a multitude of psychologists for many years. However, B. F. Skinner, a renowned psychologist known for his work on behaviourism and operant conditioning laid the foundation for understanding how habits are formed and can be modified through behavioural interventions, reinforcement and punishment.

In conclusion, Habit Formation Therapy is a valuable tool to help individuals make positive changes in their behaviour and improve their wellbeing. By working with a therapist to identify triggers, develop strategies, and build healthier habits, individuals can overcome harmful behaviours and cultivate a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Does Green Therapy Improve Mental Health?

“Adopt the pace of nature. Her secret is patience.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson
In the modern age, it has been suggested that people have lost something.

The digital saturation of smartphones and living in the city seems to be commonplace now and it has been suggested by Kings College London (2023) that this has led to the rise or complexity of mental health issues.

The act of taking a walk in the woods, sitting in a field, or even walking through a meadow has fallen by the wayside. Even walking a dog in a park is now seen as something which few people have the time to do but, studies have found that stepping away from the screens and into the green space has a profound effect on mental health.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

This is a diagnosis you may be given if you develop anxiety problems after going through something you found traumatic. (As Mental Health Conditions, PTSD is normally associated with Military Veterans, however, it can effect anyone). PTSD can cause flashbacks or nightmares which can feel like you’re re-living all the fear and anxiety you experienced during the actual event. The condition was first identified in war veterans and has often been referred to as ‘shell shock’. It does not mean that you have to have been a soldier to experience PTSD. You may have experienced ongoing domestic violence or abuse, repeatedly witnessing violence or abuse, torture, kidnapping or slavery, being a prisoner of war or being forced to become a s*x worker. There are different types of PTSD:

Delayed-onset PTSD
If your symptoms emerge more than six months after experiencing trauma, this might be described as ‘delayed PTSD’ or ‘delayed-onset PTSD’.

Complex PTSD
If you experienced trauma at an early age or it lasted for a long time, you might be given a diagnosis of ‘complex PTSD’. Symptoms may include childhood abuse, neglect or abandonment, difficulty controlling emotions, often experiencing dissociative symptoms such as depersonalisation or derealisation, constant feelings of emptiness or hopelessness, regular suicidal feelings, feeling very hostile or distrustful towards the world, avoiding friendships and relationships, or finding them very difficult, feeling like nobody can understand what happened to you, feeling as if you are permanently damaged or worthless and/or feeling as if you are completely different to other people.

Birth Trauma PTSD
This can develop after a traumatic experience of childbirth is also known as ‘birth trauma’.

If you experience some PTSD symptoms while supporting someone close to you who’s experienced trauma, this is sometimes known as ‘secondary trauma’.

Exposure Therapy (ET) is a widely recognised and effective psychological treatment for anxiety disorders. It is a form of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) that aims to reduce anxiety and fear responses by gradually exposing individuals to the situations or stimuli that trigger their distress. The therapy helps individuals confront their fears in a safe and controlled environment, allowing them to learn healthier copier mechanisms. The primary goal is to reduce fear responses by facilitating the process of habituation and de-sensitisation.

During ET, individuals work closely with a trained therapist who guides them through a series of gradual and controlled exposures to anxiety-provoking situations or stimuli. The exposure can occur in various ways, such as imaginal exposure (mentally visualising feared scenarios), in vivo exposure (directly confronting feared situations), or virtual reality simulations exposure (using virtual environments to simulate feared situations). The therapy typically follows a hierarchical approach, starting with less anxiety-inducing stimuli and gradually progressing to more challenging ones. This gradual exposure allows individuals to build resilience and develop coping mechanisms, ultimately reducing their anxiety responses.

Exposure Therapy has proven to be a highly effective treatment for anxiety and fear-based disorders. By gradually exposing individuals to their fears, this therapy promotes habituation and de-sensitisation, leading to reduced anxiety responses. With its success rates and broad applications, Exposure Therapy offers hope and relief to those struggling with anxiety disorders.

Gaslighting – What to do when you spot it in your relationship...

“To gaslight someone is to steal their reality, piece by piece.” — Robin Torres

If you have been on social media in the last few months (or years), you will have seen the phrase gaslighting.

Much like narcissism, it can be thrown around in contexts that don’t deserve it, making it a term that is often misused on social media. The phrase itself gets its origins from a 1938 play “Gaslight” by Patrick Hamilton, in which a husband manipulates his wife into doubting her sanity by dimming the lights in their home and then denying this when she notices.
