What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based therapy which can help to reduce distress and improve your ability to function.

CBT can be used with school-aged children and youth with a stronger focus on behaviour so can be used with children aged 4 and above. CBT helps children and youth become more aware of their thoughts, actions and feelings so they can view difficult situations more clearly and respond more effectively.

CBT is an effective treatment for a wide range of challenges, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, low self-esteem, anger problems, obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder and symptoms

Research has shown that children and youth experiencing anxiety and depression are less likely to relapse when treated with CBT.

Gaslighting – What to do when you spot it in your relationship

“To gaslight someone is to steal their reality, piece by piece.” — Robin Torres

If you have been on social media in the last few months (or years), you will have seen the phrase gaslighting.

Much like narcissism, it can be thrown around in contexts that don’t deserve it, making it a term that is often misused on social media. The phrase itself gets its origins from a 1938 play “Gaslight” by Patrick Hamilton, in which a husband manipulates his wife into doubting her sanity by dimming the lights in their home and then denying this when she notices.

Ergo, he is deliberately coercing her into thinking that her perception of reality is wrong.

The phrase “gaslighting” became clinically relevant in the 1960’s and started to gain traction online in the early 2000’s, making it a bit of a buzzword relating to control and emotional manipulation.

So, what is it clinically, and if you spot it in your intimate relationships, what should you do? read more here: https://myfamilypsychologist.com/gaslighting-what-to-do-when-you-spot-it-in-your-relationship/

How to survive and thrive on Valentine’s Day

Do you dread February 14th? Rest assured, that’s understandable and totally normal. Research [1] has shown that people have extreme feelings towards the day: they either love it or they hate it! If you’re a singleton it can bring up feelings of being an outsider or magnify feelings of loneliness. Whereas if you’re in a relationship the expectations around the day, especially if your relationship is going through a tricky time, may feel you with dread. Here, though are five ways you can survive – and even thrive – on Valentine’s Day.

Problems that arise in early childhood may be indicative of underlying conditions or emerging pathologies. Challenges or delays in developmental milestones are of note, as well as any difficulties associated with feeding, sleeping, toileting, attachments, trauma, intellectual and neuro difficulties, and general behavioural or conduct problems. Assessment and intervention at this stage is primarily conducted via observation and with the caregiver given this early stage in development, and typical problems encountered include social and communication difficulties, educational attainment challenges, and attachment and separation anxieties for example.

Eye Movement De-Sensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that has been shown to be highly effective in treating a range of mental health issues, particularly those related to trauma. This therapy works by allowing individuals to process traumatic memories in a safe and controlled manner, helping them to reprocess these memories in a way that reduces their emotional impact and allows for healing to take place.

EMDR was first developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. Shapiro discovered the therapeutic benefits of eye movements when she noticed that certain eye movements reduced the emotional intensity of her own disturbing thoughts. This led her to develop a technique that involved guiding patients to move their eyes from side to side while simultaneously recalling traumatic memories. Over several years, Shapiro refined this technique and developed a structured protocol that has since been widely adopted and recognised as an effective therapy for trauma-related issues.
