Tonight we look at risk factors which increase the risk of developing hip arthritis. Please don't panic if you identify with any of the risks, I myself fall nicely into the FAI with large restriction into internal rotation and flexion category! If you are a chair leaner your body is basically looking for support- the chair arm is giving you stability. However unfortunately if you sit habitually in this position and especially for long periods, it can start to overload the hip joint and spine and also add to muscle imbalance.
Just sitting straight is probably not an option as you will naturally find yourself leaning again! Using pillows can really help. You may need one behind you (try to relax into it, not sit rigid) and 1 or 2 underneath each arm. A V pillow can also work well. You don't want to be leaning down to find the pillow- they should be at a natural height to support your arms.

I think about the people with hip pain who come to see me- and I give advice as to where they could modify their daily activities to help, teach them exercises to practice and incorporate in to their often busy lives. Those who have had recent surgery and are at the beginning of their journey. Sometimes it feels very daunting, as though there is a mountain to climb- but as this quote says the hardest part is starting and making that commitment to change habits and stick to a regular exercise programme.
You can do it and we are all here to support!

Reading this really means a lot. When I started this group, it was purely to help my patients through lockdown #1. It has grown and grown and made me see that I could do more to help. Hence, I started the long journey of putting together an evidence- based program for gluteal tendinopathy.

A painful, stiff hip can make shaving your legs a real pain! Here are some tips to help make it a slightly easier experience!
Long-handled razor- there are a few different ones out there. Most you attach your razor to, some are electric. I haven't tried this option yet! Let us know if you have one!
Non-slip step. This is my preferred choice. It stops that 'where shall I put my leg' manouevre!
Suction-cup foot rest. Again not one I've tried but as it sticks to the wall it may be a good option if space is restricted!

Todayt we look at what a subchondral cyst or geode is.
Often patients are worried when they are quickly told that they have a “cyst” in their hip! However a subchondral cyst is a common finding in a hip with arthritis and is not a worrying feature.
Hopefully this will help allay any fears!!

When I see people who have been given this stretch for their hip pain by a health care professional, it brings out my inner 😡 emoji!!
Avoid this stretch at all costs, especially if you have Gluteal Tendinopathy or an irritable hip joint, this video explains why.
