👂🏼Ears are made mostly of cartilage and with little insulating fat they become cold very easily. The sensitive lining of the ear is also very susceptible to cold 🥶 temperatures and ear ache is common in the cold weather but did you know that cold weather can cause physical changes in your ears??
As the temperatures plummet this can lead to a thickening of the skin and bone cells in the ear as the body tries to protect itself from the cold. This can result in bony growths called exostosis in the ear. This can lead to pain, 😭 dizziness,😵💫 tinnitus and even hearing loss 🦻🏻in some cases. These abnormal growths can interfere with the reception of sounds through the ear canal to the ear drum. It can also create interfere with the body’s ability to produce and expel earwax. Ear wax can also become hardened and more impacted during cold weather. The ear wax and any water that has become trapped by the bony growth then increases the risk of infections 🤢.
