Your midwife will ask you about your baby’s movements at every antenatal contact. This is because baby’s movements is your best way to gauge their wellbeing.

If you have any concerns, please attend your local hospital immediately. Do not wait for your next community midwife appointment or contact us via email - this requires same-day medical attention.

Dates for our January antenatal classes are now out!

These classes are for:
- Rodings families
- First time parents
- 32+ weeks at the time of classes
- Parents who have not done private classes
- Available for both evenings

Slots are allocated on a first come first served basis; please email us with your name, NHS number, due date, hospital of birth and phone number.

This week we say farewell to our amazing Nic as she starts her maternity leave! Nic has been a part of our community team since shortly after she qualified, and is part of its heart and soul 💛

Safe to say she will be truly missed, but we hope she loves every minute of this next adventure and we will be waiting with open arms when she comes back in 2028.

- not accessing private classes

Spaces are limited to 8 couples - please ensure you are free for both sessions before booking.

Did you know…
All pregnant people are eligible for the RSV vaccine from 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) often affects infants under 6 months old and can lead to complications such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis requiring hospitalisation.
This vaccine is 72% effective for newborns in preventing hospital admissions when their mother or birth parent is vaccinated at least 2 weeks before birth.

These classes take place over 2 separate sessions, so please make sure you are available for both dates before booking, and that you meet the following criteria:

- first time parents
- under the care of Rodings team either at PAH or Rosie hospitals
- who are 32+ weeks at the time of the classes
- who have not attended private classes e.g. NCT

What do you know about perineal tearing? This is often a source of anxiety for pregnant people planning va**nal birth.

Your midwife will:
- suggest you try perineal massage from 35 weeks
- encourage you to push in optimal positions such as side lying or kneeling
- offer a “hands-on” technique to protect your perineum (the skin between your va**na and a**s)
- use a warm compress to relax the perineal tissues to help them stretch
- in some cases, offer an episiotomy (a cut to your perineum when birthing your baby’s head) to direct any serious tears away from your a**s

During your labour, midwives will offer to monitor your baby’s heartbeat and your contractions to ensure your baby is coping well.

Intermittent Intelligent Auscultation (IIA) is routinely offered to low-risk patients birthing at home or on the midwife-led unit.

CTG monitoring is available on Labour Ward for birthing people considered high risk - this may include diabetes, pre-eclampsia, growth restriction, reduced fetal movements, epidural, oxytocin augmentation or concerns picked up on IIA.
