Imagine waiting years for a diagnosis that could change your life, only to find that the wait itself has already changed it for the worse. The lengthy NHS waiting lists for ASD and ADHD assessments are causing untold damage, not just financially but emotionally and socially. This article delves into the hidden costs of these delays and calls for urgent action.

The Emotional Toll:

The emotional toll of waiting for an ASD or ADHD diagnosis cannot be overstated. For many, the wait is a period of heightened anxiety and uncertainty. Without a formal diagnosis, individuals often struggle to understand their own experiences and behaviours. Parents of children suspected of having ASD or ADHD are left in limbo, feeling powerless to help their child in the absence of a clear diagnosis. This prolonged period of waiting exacerbates stress and can lead to significant mental health challenges, including depression and anxiety.

Financial Strain:

The financial strain of long waiting lists is another significant, yet often overlooked, issue. Many families, desperate for answers and support, turn to private assessments. These can cost several hundred to thousands of pounds, a significant financial burden for most households. The alternative is to endure the wait, during which families may face increased childcare costs, lost income from reduced working hours, and other related expenses.

In my line of work, I talk to a lot of Therapists. I've noticed that I get more emails and contacts from Psychologists, Psychotherapists, and Counselors on Sunday than on any other day of the week.

Frequently, I hear Sunday referred to as 'admin' day when they do everything except talk to clients. And sometimes, they do that, too.

I'm left wondering how aligned their work is with their personal objectives, given so many have families.

So this Sunday, if you can have a day off, give yourself permission to do so.

Then on Monday, give me a call, and let's see if we can reorganise your work so that you never have to have an 'admin' Sunday again.

As a result of my own lived experience and my work with Psychologists and Counsellors who work in Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) it's more evident than ever before that workplace trauma is more prevalent than we acknowledge.

Kudos to the Mental Health First Aiders(MHFA) for their frontline support; they're invaluable. Yet, let's not overlook the root cause. Much of the trauma originates from the culture we allow to permeate our workplaces.

While having MHFAs and EAPs is crucial, it's merely scratching the surface. We must delve deeper into the core issues.

Drawing from personal experiences across various corporate landscapes, I've seen fear as a common denominator in workplace issues. Poor management practices breed anxiety and toxic environments.

Take, for instance, unrealistic demands from higher-ups. What may seem like a reasonable request at the top can manifest as immense pressure further down the hierarchy, fostering fear and anxiety among employees.

Organizations need to reassess their practices. Tying performance solely to monetary rewards can fuel toxic behaviour. Kindness, empathy, and personal development and their proxies should also be integral metrics for evaluating managerial success.

To Psychologists and EAP professionals: your role transcends fixing individuals. Challenge organizational structures and leadership to address underlying toxic behaviours.

And to the incredible Mental Health First Aiders: your efforts save lives daily. But let's ensure management acknowledges the importance of mental health investment and commits to tackling root causes, not just symptoms.

Together, let's cultivate workplaces that prioritize mental well-being.

When I decided to leave banking and quit the rat race forever, I was faced with a choice: should I train to become a Psychologist or do something entirely different?

Over the past decade, my journey has fueled a passion for mental health. Impacted by anxious feelings, I knew I had to change how I lived my life. I was also increasingly aware of my mortality, having experienced life-impact surgery three times.

Clear that I should leave banking I found myself leaning towards preventing more people from going down the 'burnout' and miserable lives path I had.

I recalled the words of a dear friend of mine. He suggested that rather than fixing all the problems yourself, you were better off acting more strategically—macro over micro. My mind was drawn to the compound effect of touching a life and, in turn, seeing everyone they knew benefit from their example and influence. Mental Health is like that; contagious in a positive way.

I decided to influence as many lives as I could. If I could touch the lives of Psychologists and Counsellors, they would, in turn, have a more significant impact themselves. For every person they helped, their impact would rub off on an even more substantial number of people.

Surely Psychologists and Counsellors are doing fine on their own already? After all, they know how to look after themselves and have Supervisors and therapeutic services available whenever needed. That's true partly, and for some, that's all they need.

However, having interviewed many therapists over the years, it has become clear that therapists aren't always living their best lives. Even with full books, they tell me they don't have enough time to do what they want in both their business and personal lives.

So, I decided that I would focus on helping therapists thrive, knowing that when they thrive, they are in their best position to help others. And, every time they help someone, they likely also touch the lives of the family and friends of that individual.

Helping people has such a compound effect. That's why I love what I do.

If adults didn’t help you navigate your emotions as a child, there’s a good chance you still struggle with accessing, feeling or processing them… But navigating emotions is a skill that can be learned and developed over time. It’s never too late to learn.

Note to self: You have to look forward. You have to begin telling the story of where you're going, not where you've been.
