Purging After Microneedling – Is It Normal?
It can feel worrying when a few tiny bumps or whiteheads appear after a microneedling treatment. Many people think it’s a breakout, but sometimes it’s actually part of the skin’s normal healing process called purging.
✨ What is purging?
Purging happens when microneedling speeds up your skin’s natural cell turnover. When this happens, congestion that was already forming under the skin can come to the surface faster than usual. This may appear as a few small whiteheads within a few days after treatment.
✨ How long does it last?
If your skin is purging, it’s usually temporary. It can last from a few days up to around two weeks while the skin clears out the congestion that was already there.
✨ Purging vs a reaction
Purging usually appears as small bumps in areas where you normally break out. If you notice excessive redness, heat, spreading irritation, or painful spots, that may not be purging and it’s always best to speak to your practitioner.
✨ Is peeling normal after microneedling?
Yes , light peeling or flaking can also happen. Microneedling stimulates collagen and increases cell turnover, so the outer layer of skin may naturally shed as new, fresh skin comes through. This often starts around day 2–3 after treatment.
✨ Aftercare is key
During this time I always recommend keeping your routine simple and gentle:
• Hydrating, fragrance-free moisturiser
• Gentle cleanser
• Avoid scrubs or exfoliating products while the skin is healing
More detailed aftercare advice is always provided after your microneedling treatment, so you know exactly how to care for your skin during the healing process.
Remember, this phase is temporary and part of the renewal process that helps reveal fresher, healthier-looking skin.
