Most HR issues don’t start as big problems. They become expensive because they’re ignored.

This is common within SMEs:

• No contracts in place “yet”
• Policies copied from Google but never updated
• Performance issues brushed under the carpet
• Managers unsure what they can and can’t say

Until suddenly… it’s a grievance. Or a resignation. Or worse — a tribunal risk.

The truth? HR isn’t about paperwork. It’s about protecting your business before things go wrong.

And the businesses that get ahead of it? They spend less time firefighting and more time growing.

If you’re not sure where your risks are, we offer a simple HR health check that highlights gaps quickly and clearly.

Having a sexual harassment policy is no longer enough.

Employers now have a legal duty to actively prevent harassment in the workplace.

Caption: The introduction of the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act places a stronger obligation on employers to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment.

Employers should be able to demonstrate they have:

• A clear sexual harassment policy
• Training for staff and managers
• A confidential reporting process
• A workplace risk assessment identifying potential risks
• Proactive measures to prevent issues arising

For many businesses, the risk assessment element is the missing piece.

This might include considering risks such as:

• Client or customer interactions
• Lone working
• Social events and work travel
• Power imbalances within teams

Taking a proactive approach protects employees — but it also protects the business.

If your documentation hasn’t been reviewed recently, it may be worth checking it reflects the current expectations.

PPE is only effective when it’s used correctly, and consistently.

It’s your last line of defence, not your only control measure. Making sure it fits properly, is well maintained, and is worn as intended is key to keeping your team safe.

A strong safety culture goes beyond equipment, it’s about training, awareness, and doing things the right way every day.

If you need support reviewing your workplace safety measures, we’re here to help.

The probation period is one of the most powerful tools employers have, yet it's often underused or poorly managed.

A well-structured probation process allows businesses to:

• Confirm the role is the right fit for both sides
• Address performance issues early
• Provide structured feedback and support
• Reduce the risk of long-term performance problems
• Make confident decisions about employment continuation

But here’s the reality I often see when supporting SMEs:

The probation period passes… No reviews take place… No feedback is documented… And suddenly the employee is fully confirmed.

Probation reviews aren't about catching people out — they are about setting employees up for success and protecting the business at the same time.

If you’re unsure whether your probation process is doing what it should, it might be time to review it.

When HR and H&S work together, businesses benefit from a joined-up, practical approach that protects both the organisation and its people.

Think about it:

• Absence management often links directly to workplace health and wellbeing

• Disciplinary or performance issues can stem from safety concerns or poor working environments

• Training, culture and compliance all overlap

When these areas are handled by separate providers, things can become fragmented. Advice can conflict. Gaps can appear. And responsibility can become unclear.

But when HR and H&S sit under one roof, you get:

✔ Consistent, aligned advice

✔ A clearer compliance picture

✔ A stronger, safer workplace culture

Most importantly, you get proactive support that looks at the whole business — not just individual issues in isolation.

Because building a successful business isn’t just about ticking boxes.

It’s about creating an environment where people can work safely, confidently and productively.

28/03/2026

The apprenticeship levy is changing — and many employers still aren’t using it effectively.

The UK Government has announced plans to reform the apprenticeship levy into a broader Growth and Skills Levy.

The aim is to give employers more flexibility in how training funds can be used.

Currently, many organisations struggle to fully utilise the levy because funding is restricted to approved apprenticeship standards. The proposed changes are expected to allow funding to support a wider range of skills development.

What is changing from April 2026:

· Levy funds will expire after 12 months, reduced from the current 24 months window
· Employer co investment will rise to 25 percent once levy funds are exhausted, up from 5 percent.
· The 10 percent Government top up will be removed, meaning employers will only access the value of their own contributions.

But as with any policy change, the detail will matter.

Forward-thinking employers should already be thinking about how workforce development fits into their longer-term strategy.
