When did you last review your fire risk assessment?

If your workplace has changed, whether that’s layout, equipment, or team size, your current assessment might already be out of date.

Taking a proactive approach now can prevent serious risks later.

👉 Not sure if yours is still valid? Our team can help review and update your fire risk assessment with confidence.

The apprenticeship levy is changing — and many employers still aren’t using it effectively.

The UK Government has announced plans to reform the apprenticeship levy into a broader Growth and Skills Levy.

The aim is to give employers more flexibility in how training funds can be used.

Currently, many organisations struggle to fully utilise the levy because funding is restricted to approved apprenticeship standards. The proposed changes are expected to allow funding to support a wider range of skills development.

What is changing from April 2026:

· Levy funds will expire after 12 months, reduced from the current 24 months window
· Employer co investment will rise to 25 percent once levy funds are exhausted, up from 5 percent.
· The 10 percent Government top up will be removed, meaning employers will only access the value of their own contributions.

But as with any policy change, the detail will matter.

Forward-thinking employers should already be thinking about how workforce development fits into their longer-term strategy.

Family friendly employment rights are continuing to evolve — and employers need to keep up.

Supporting employees with family responsibilities is increasingly becoming a central part of modern employment practices.

Recent changes that employers should already be aware of include:

• Day-one right to request flexible working • Carer’s Leave entitlement • Extended redundancy protection for those returning from maternity leave

There are further developments coming in April around Paternity and Parental leave.

For employers, this means family friendly policies should not be something that sit unchanged for years.

When done well, strong family friendly policies don’t just ensure compliance — they support retention, engagement and a healthier workplace culture.

The UK minimum wage is rising again in April 2026, and for many businesses this will have a real impact on payroll as well as pricing.

While pay increases are a positive step for employees, employers need to be prepared for the ripple effect:

• Increased salary costs across teams
• Pay differentials needing review
• Pressure on margins and pricing
• Updated budgets and workforce planning

This isn’t just about staying compliant with the new rates. It’s about making thoughtful, strategic decisions that protect both your people and your business.

If you haven’t reviewed your pay and workforce strategy yet — consider this your sign to start now.

A major shift is on the horizon for UK employers…

The change to unfair dismissal qualifying service, reducing from 2 years to just 6 months.

This means employees gain unfair dismissal protection much earlier in their employment, placing greater importance on:

• Strong recruitment and probation processes
• Clear documentation and probation review procedure
• Consistent and fair decision-making
• Confident, well-trained managers

For many businesses, this will require a mindset shift. The “we’ll deal with it before 2 years” safety net is disappearing. Now is the time to review contracts, probation policies and manager capability before these changes come into force.

The government is moving towards a more supportive sick pay system – this means

• SSP from day one of sickness (no waiting days)
• More employees becoming eligible
• Greater responsibility on employers to review policies and processes

This isn’t just a payroll tweak; it’s a compliance shift.

Now is the time to review your sickness policy and your payroll process.

Handled well, these changes are an opportunity to strengthen wellbeing and lead with fairness.
Handled poorly… they can quickly become a compliance headache.

If you’re unsure what this means for your business, now is the moment to get ahead of it — not react to it later.
