Bunions, also known as hallux valgus, are a common foot condition where a bony bump forms at the base of the big toe. Over time, the toe can start to lean inwards, which may cause pain, swelling and difficulty wearing certain shoes comfortably.
They often develop due to genetics, foot structure or prolonged pressure from tight or narrow footwear. Symptoms can include tenderness around the joint, stiffness in the big toe and the development of corns or calluses.
Management usually starts with simple measures such as wearing wider, supportive shoes, using orthotics and managing inflammation. In more advanced cases, surgery may be considered to correct the alignment.
If you are experiencing persistent discomfort, an assessment with a specialist can help determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
