Lifestyle medicine is the topic of world menopause day this year and such an important topic. There might be a change you could choose to make which might improve your symptoms and your future health.

The IMS white paper this year looks in detail at this and is worth reading if you are interested in learning more.

I recently ran an afternoon webinar for a department of the police on lifestyle medicine including epigenetics, telomeres, gut health, sleep structure, exercise, mental health, nutrition and the feedback was really positive. If your workplace might benefit from this please email: info@rowenahealth.co.uk

I was delighted to attend the first World Menopause and Cancer Day event in London this week hosted by Dani Binnington and Menopause and Cancer CIC (not-for-profit). Their hard work, passion and determination to improve care for women who experience menopause after cancer means that the life of women who experience this will be different.

By 2050, 16.3 million women will be diagnosed with cancer annually (World Health organisation). 40% of those will be under the age of 40 and up to 90% over the age of 40 will go into permanent menopause after their cancer treatment. Many say menopause is the hardest and loneliest part of life after cancer.

Survey of 1,200 people conducted by Menopause and Cancer and UCLH found that 75% of women received little or no information about how cancer treatment could affect their hormone health or fertility and said these symptoms were worse or more difficult to manage than the cancer treatment itself. 90% said menopause symptoms or changes to health after cancer significantly impacted their quality of life.More than 90% were not given any plan to help manage menopause-related health changes brought on by cancer treatment. Only 1% had a clear plan in place. 3% felt adequately supported by healthcare professionals. 99% believe better support should be in place for those experiencing menopause as a result of cancer

The campaign aims to change this, menopause support built into cancer care, better education for health professionals and better access to safe therapies and specialist care.

I was delighted to speak with Greatest Hits radio and comment for BBC News South east about the importance of this day.

Happy International Women’s Day!

In 2025 IWD is focusing on accelerating action for gender equality. When we look at our world we can easily see that significant barriers to gender equality remain. With support and the right action we can make positive progress for women everywhere.

Thank you for asking me to take part in your panel discussions on your educational day, with Menopause and aesthetics.

Detailed guidance about how we can manage women who go through their menopause under the age of 40 (and also taking into account those who have an early menopause between 40 and 45 years) is so important as the recommendations and discussion about benefits and risks are different from those we have with women who go through their menopause above the age of 45 years. It is so important to get this right to help protect the future health of women who go through their menopause early.

There are changes in the way this is diagnosed, so it is important to be aware of these.

If you are a woman and you have been having menstrual cycles and suddenly your cycles become irregular or stop for more than four months, please see your doctor to discuss why this could be happening to you.

If you take one of the GLP-1 agonists you must use effective contraception if there is a chance you could become pregnant. These medicines are not recommended in pregnancy.

If you are planning to become pregnant then you must check how long the recommended ‘washout period’ is (time before discontinuation of the medication and trying to become pregnant) for the type of medication you are taking. It could be up to 3 months, that you need to wait when you stop your weight loss medication before starting to try for a baby.

These medications can cause diarrhoea and vomiting so please be sure that you understand how to manage this as this may affect the effectiveness of your oral hormonal contraception .

If you take Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) then please read the advice about use of oral hormonal contraceptives when you start and when you increase the dose.

Weight loss can affect your periods, for some people this may affect the regularity of their cycle, but other people that periods can start to return with weight loss. Please be sure you were using effective contraception if you need this.

Today at Menopause in Aesthetics I was delighted to see and !

Dr Ginny Mansberg is the author of the M Word, an absolutely fabulous book all about menopause which I highly recommend.

Dr Mandy Leonhardt is the author of POI and Early Menopause and What Every Woman Needs to Know About her Skin and Hair both of which are packed full of incredible information for us.

Both of these amazing women are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to skin and Ginny has her own skin care products called which I will be trying now, to help with rosacea.

I really enjoyed speaking on the panel about menopause in young women with and Dr Nabil Elmahdawi. Thank you for inviting me.

Events such as this are so important for women’s health. I learnt a huge amount and made some absolutely wonderful connections.
