The Youth Fairy Guildford & Lightwater

The Youth Fairy Guildford & Lightwater We help them SMILE with happiness, SPARKLE with confidence and STRIVE to grow and succeed. We are both LGBTQ+ friendly therapists.

A modern, solution-focused approach to positive change for children, teens and young adults struggling with anxiety, stress, low mood, anger and low confidence. Hello👋 We are Sam and Sarah, therapists at The Youth Fairy, a team of solution-focused therapists who help children, teens and young adults struggling with anxiety, stress, anger, emotional control and low confidence. We use modern, brain-based approaches, including Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy, that actively encourage young people to:

🧚 Re-focus on the positive aspects of life
🧚 Recognise strengths
🧚 Improve quality of sleep
🧚 Engage more in positive activities
🧚 Engage more in positive interactions
🧚 Feel more emotionally in control

We both work with children from 6 years old to young adults and are able to adapt our approach to work with those with additional needs, special educational needs, disabilities and neurodiversity. Areas we work with include:

🧡 Anxiety
🧡 Stress
🧡 Low mood
🧡 Anger management
🧡 Social anxiety
🧡 Low self-esteem
🧡 Low confidence
🧡 Sports/exam performance
🧡 Fears and phobias
🧡 Exam stress and anxiety
🧡 Transition to secondary school/college
🧡 Trauma
🧡 Self-harm
🧡 Sleep problems

We are both extremely passionate about the solution-focused approach to therapy. It encourages children to focus on the positive changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviours they would like to make, without the need to dwell on the past. We look for solutions to problems and focus on how they want thing to be rather than how they don’t want them to be.

🧚About Sarah🧚

In addition to being a therapist, my 25 years experience as a nurse working in critical care, has given me a deep understanding of physical and emotional well-being. I have worked with children and their families at their most vulnerable, navigating both physical and mental challenges, including pain, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem.

🧚About Sam🧚

I began my career as an osteopath and went on to specialise in paediatric osteopathy, helping children to navigate their emotional and physical health. Seeing the rise in children and young adults struggling with anxiety and depression, I realised I wanted to centre my work into helping young people with their mental health. This drove my desire to become a therapist and, of course, a Youth Fairy!

🌟 Next Steps 🌟

🧚Once you have chosen which of us you feel is right for your child, we offer a free, 1 hour initial consultation. This is an opportunity for us to meet, explore best hopes and discuss how we can help your child.

🧚 As well as helping young people make positive changes, educating them on their well-being is something we know to be an important part of the change process.

🧚 So, in the consultation, we'll explain to you and your child how the brain works (in an age-appropriate way) to create their specific problems and associated feelings, behaviours or symptoms and how we can help.

🌟 This understanding can be really motivational to children as they realise there is hope, see more clearly what we can do about it and supports them in developing more positive, healthy habits for life.

🌟 This knowledge is super helpful for you as a parent too - it allows for greater understanding, creates a common language to talk more easily with your child about their well-being and gives you specific ideas of how you can best support the process (and beyond). You’ll also get our relaxation audio download to help improve any sleep problems they are having and support the process. 😴😴😴

We both hold an up-to-date Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and are proud members of the following professional bodies:

• National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH)
• Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH)
• Complementary and National Health Council (CNHC)
• National Board of Modern Psychotherapy (NBMP)

Full testimonial:-My daughter started going to the youth fairy with social anxiety as I was concerned about her starting secondary school not being able to talk to new people. The therapy has made a big impact even after a few sessions we saw her personality starting to shine at home as well as out and about. She is not a loud person but you can see she now has greater confidence in what she does and approaches new situations rather than avoiding them. I would definitely recommend the Youth Fairy it’s been worth every penny thank you.

✨ New Blog ✨ Today is Stress Awareness Day, so we are spotlighting PTSD and specifically PTSD in children and young people.

PTSD stands for Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder, and it is a condition that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic life-threatening event or serious injury.

Most people recover from a traumatic incident without it affecting their mental health.

PTSD has a specific set of symptoms which last for longer than a month and which interfere with day-to-day life and for which help is available.

Some examples of traumatic events may include:

😔 assault
😔 road traffic incident
😔 natural disasters such as fire
😔 child abuse
😔 witnessing domestic violence
😔 war
😔 acts of terrorism
😔 traumatic childbirth

Did you know that trauma can be experienced vicariously as well?

Have you ever watched an episode of ‘You’ve Been Framed!’, and winced when an accident inevitably occurs? There is an evolutionary survival mechanism at play here.
We are hard wired to avoid dangers in life! 😲

Children will react in a variety of different ways after a trauma. Directly after a traumatic event, young people will often feel:

💔 frightened
💔 distressed
💔 in shock

Most people will show some short-term distress when exposed to a trauma, but over time the trauma fades to memory, at times hurtful, but no longer a cause of distress.

This week’s blog explains:

👉 What PTSD is and how to spot the signs
👉 How it manifests in our young ones
👉 How to best support your child

Thank you Yoga with Ma**ca Fit Little Biscuit and In Tune Nutrition!A great reminder of the importance of the mind/body connection to health and the things we can do to support ourselves physically, nutritiously and mentally through the perimenopause phase of life. ⭐️ On the Blog ⭐️

Our blog this week aims to help remove the stigma and raise awareness of what self-injury is and to help encourage individuals, their families, and friends to recognise the signs and seek the right support.

Sadly, self-injury is more commonly performed by teenagers and young adults and is often very misunderstood. It is a serious behaviour that signals an individual is going through intense emotional pain yet, at the same time, has not developed strategies to cope in healthier ways.

Many people may be surprised to know that self-injury is often NOT performed with suicidal intent, but rather, is developed as a coping strategy for dealing with very intense feelings of emotional pain.

💛 Not only is it often difficult to talk about for the individual concerned, but it can also be very distressing to deal with as a loved one or a parent of the young person affected. Opening up a conversation can be challenging, as can knowing where to turn to find the right information or support.

🧚 So, today, we are shining the spotlight on this very emotive topic. With greater understanding, we are in a much stronger position to support our young people through challenging times.

So, with that in mind, head on over to the parent pad and take a read of this week’s blog to find out…

👉 What self-injury is (and what it isn’t).
👉 Why young people might self-injure and what is happening in the brain to create these behaviours.
👉 How to spot the signs and support your child.
👉 Where to go for further help, advice, and support.

🧚 My SMILE for Parents programme is designed to help you regain a greater sense of emotional control and will support you in making those positive changes in thoughts and behaviours you need to feel calmer, happier and much more confident as a person – and as a parent.

And the great thing is our Solution Focused approach means you don’t need to excessively talk about past problems, your perceived ‘parenting mistakes’ (even Youth Fairies have felt that completely unhelpful parent guilt) or trauma in order to get you back on top of things and feeling like yourself again.

Can help to...

✔️ Boost feelings of overall happiness
✔️ Cope calmly with everyday situations
✔️ Feel in control of reactions, thoughts & emotions
✔️ Rediscover your confidence & self-recognition
✔️ Develop a more positive outlook
✔️ Interact more positively with others
✔️ Cope better with life challenges
✔️ Improve connection with your child(ren)
✔️ Improve sleep problems
