👋Meet the Optometrist: Vicky Roberts

As part of our Meet the Team series, we’re pleased to introduce Vicky Roberts, an Optometrist at our dedicated eye hospital in Central London and a qualified Independent Prescriber.

Vicky has worked as an optometrist since graduating from Aston University in 1990, bringing a wealth of experience across hospital, high street and refractive settings. More recently, she achieved her Independent Prescribing (IP) qualification in July 2022, further expanding her clinical scope and ability to support patients throughout their treatment journey👏

Her interest in optometry started at school when she was referred for an eye examination from a school screening test: “The optometrist who tested my eyes was very charismatic and explained each step of the examination to me, which I found fascinating”.

Today, that early inspiration continues to shape her approach to patient care:
“My work is rewarding because I see the huge improvements we can make to people’s vision and lives."

At Optegra, Vicky plays an important role in delivering high-quality care and supporting patients through every stage of their treatment. Outside of work, she enjoys long walks with her whippet and spending time with her family.

Don’t lose sight of your eye health this World Optometry Day👁️

Today we’re celebrating and saying thank you to optometrists everywhere who play such a vital role in protecting our vision and overall health. 👏

A visit to your local optician is about much more than updating your glasses or contact lens prescription. Routine eye tests can detect early signs of eye conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration, often before symptoms appear, as well as wider health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Professor Clare O’Donnell, Head of Eye Sciences and Optometry at Optegra, highlights how strong partnerships with community optometrists allow patients to move seamlessly from routine eye care into specialist treatment when needed - improving outcomes and helping prevent avoidable sight loss.

"Optegra’s work and partnerships with local optometry practices to provide post-cataract assessment has allowed us to free up time for over 20,000 new patient hospital appointments at Optegra a year, which all helps reduce waiting lists for treatment and frees up time for us to review and treat new patients who need sight-saving care.

This shift has positioned optometrists as playing a more proactive role in addressing both eye health and overall wellbeing, and we are proud to celebrate this on World Optometry Day.”

👋Meet the Optometrist: Mohib Tahir

As part of our Meet the Team series, we’re continuing to introduce the talented professionals who care for our patients across Optegra, this week focusing on our optometrists.

Mohib is an Independent Prescribing Optometrist and currently serves as Lead Optometrist at Optegra Eye Hospital in Preston, as well as supporting the team at Optegra Manchester. With over 17 years of experience across both hospital and community optometry, he has developed extensive expertise in delivering advanced clinical eye care.

In his current role, Mohib carries out comprehensive assessments for cataract patients, manages post-operative care, and performs YAG laser procedures to treat posterior capsular opacification. He is also involved in the pre and post-operative care of patients undergoing vision correction procedures, including laser refractive surgery and refractive lens exchange, at Optegra.

💬“One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is being able to deliver treatments that can have an immediate and transformative impact on a patient’s vision. I also support multiple Optegra sites and this brings great variety to my working week and allows me to work closely with a wide range of ophthalmologists and multidisciplinary teams. This has been an invaluable learning experience while helping us maintain the highest standards of patient care.”

Outside of work, Mohib and his wife are kept busy by their three young children. While he once enjoyed reading regularly, he now prefers audiobooks, which allows him to make the most of his time. He also has a keen interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which helps him stay fit and provides a welcome way to unwind.

Two weeks after SMILE laser eye surgery, Daniel is already noticing a big difference in his vision. 👁️✨

In this follow-up, he shares what recovery has been like so far and how quickly he started to see improvements after treatment at Optegra.

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a minimally invasive form of keyhole laser eye surgery designed to correct short-sightedness and reduce reliance on glasses or contact lenses. Many patients notice clearer vision within hours, with improvements continuing over the following weeks.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable sight loss, yet it often develops with no noticeable symptoms in its early stages. For this reason, it is often called the "silent thief of sight" 👁️

Recent coverage in The Independent highlights the growing number of people living with glaucoma in the UK, making early diagnosis more important than ever. The article explores how advances in technology, including AI, could help detect glaucoma earlier and protect people’s vision.

We're proud to see insights from our very own Clare O’Donnell, who discusses how advances in AI-assisted eye diagnostics could support clinicians in identifying glaucoma earlier and helping to prioritise patients who need care most urgently.

At Optegra, we know that early detection is critical to protecting vision. Regular eye examinations remain one of the most effective ways to detect glaucoma before permanent damage occurs.
