Meet the Optometrist: Gareth Towers ⭐

Continuing our Meet the Team series, we’re pleased to introduce Gareth Towers, Independent Prescribing Optometrist supporting patients at Optegra hospitals across the Midlands.

Gareth provides advanced optometric care across both NHS and private pathways, including cataract assessments, YAG capsulotomies, and refractive surgery consultations for RLE, Laser Vision Correction and ICL. As an Independent Prescriber, he brings additional expertise in managing anterior eye and glaucoma-related conditions, supporting continuity of care across the patient journey.

Gareth began his career in community practice before moving into a hospital setting, where he developed a passion for guiding patients through life-changing vision correction. He is known for his clear, reassuring communication and helping patients feel confident in their decisions.

He says:
"The most rewarding part of my role is helping someone make sense of their vision and what will genuinely improve their quality of life. Every patient deserves clarity, reassurance, and a plan that feels right for them."

Outside of clinic, Gareth enjoys spending time with his family, exploring the Midlands, and following football and motorsport.

Two brothers from South Yorkshire have fulfilled a long-held shared dream of completing vision correction surgery together, on the same day👏

Paul and Jason Cross, both from Doncaster, agree that their Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) treatment at Optegra Sheffield has been life-changing.

Paul struggled with poor eyesight and a strong +7 prescription since childhood, wearing glasses up to the age of 11, followed by years of contact lenses. But his career in the West Yorkshire Police spanning more than 20 years brought frustrations into sharp focus. “I found myself in challenging situations where my glasses were knocked off my face and broken."

Meanwhile, Jason was having his own vision challenges. “I had poor eyesight since birth, with a prescription of +8, and even an operation to fix a lazy eye when I was a child."

Today, both brothers are back doing what they love without the barrier of glasses or lenses. What began as a practical decision became something much bigger: a shared milestone, a boost in confidence and the freedom to fully see life as it happens.

“Everything feels easier,” Jason says. “My mood’s lighter.”

“We started the journey together,” Paul adds, “and we’ve come out the other side seeing the world more clearly, in every sense.”🙌

Meet the Optometrist: Niamh Clarke👋

As part of our meet the team series, say hello to Niamh, one of our talented IP-qualified Optometrists at Optegra West London!

With a Level 1 Glaucoma Certificate and a wealth of experience across multiple clinical settings, Niamh brings both expertise and passion to patient care. After moving to London in 2021, she spent 18 months in a cataract clinic before moving into community ophthalmology, where she reviewed patients referred by community optometrists to the HES (Hospital Eye Service).

Niamh has also completed YAG laser training and regularly uses her independent prescribing skills within cataract clinics. She joined Optegra in October 2024, drawn to the supportive team and the opportunity to work across a variety of services, including pre- and post-operative care and YAG laser clinics.

Outside of work, you’ll find Niamh enjoying early morning gym classes, grabbing a good coffee, or exploring London’s vibrant food scene with friends ☕✨

👋 Meet the Team: Oliver Bowen-Thomas

As part of our Meet the Team series, we're pleased to introduce Oliver Bowen-Thomas, the Area Lead Optometrist for our Brighton, Hampshire, Kent and Surrey hospitals, managing a dedicated team of 16 Optometrists. Working across both our NHS and private pathways, Oliver also runs clinics, and performs YAG laser procedures.

Oliver has been part of Optegra for over 14 years, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our patients. His career in eye care began in 1993 as an Optical Assistant before he qualified as a Dispensing Optician and later as an Optometrist. His experience includes working across both independent practices and large optical companies – including a role with Boots Opticians at the Millennium Dome in 2000.

He joined Optegra to embrace something different and values the variety each clinic brings, as well as the opportunity to continually grow as a leader, bringing our vision care to a greater number of patients.

Outside of work, Oliver enjoys watching sports, particularly Formula 1, and has a passion for cooking. He also enjoys running and spends a lot of his time supporting his son’s cricket matches, often acting as the scorer and carefully recording every ball and run!👏
