What is Sports Massage and who is it for?
A form of massage that goes deeper than a typical relaxing massage, sports massage is suitable for anyone participating in sport or exercise at any level; from amateur level sports or users of the gym, right up to elite level athletes. So whether you are a new user of the gym or preparing for your next sporting event, sports massage has its benefits. Sports massage treatment takes into account your specific activity type and level, to tailor the treatment being given.
Recovery
Any kind of exercise puts your body through wear and tear, so you want to give your muscles and tendons the opportunity to properly repair. It’s easy to skip this part of your training, but recovery is an important step of any training program. Alongside other forms of recovery such as hydration, relaxation, stretching and sleep, sports massage forms part of your recovery time.
What happens during a sports massage?
Fatigued muscles are manipulated and pressure is applied using a range of massage techniques to areas which are causing problems, as well as identifying additional areas that may be contributing towards pain, tightness or discomfort. You may experience some tenderness and/or discomfort during a sports massage, however this is normal and part of the deep tissue techniques that are used. In addition to massage, your treatment may also consist of stretching, mobilisation and/or resistance exercise, depending on your individual needs. Your therapist may also advise on exercises that may assist as part of your treatment.

What will happen at my first appointment?
Your therapist will arrange a face to face consultation to go through your current sport or activity level and talk through any issues (such as pain or tightness) you are currently experiencing, as well as any issues and/or injuries you have had in the past. Your therapist will then go through a series of physical assessments such as postural analysis, gait analysis, and range of movement/mobility assessments. We will then discuss the best treatment plan to fit your needs. Your first treatment can form part of the same appointment as your initial consultation, or it can be done at at different time.
