🌎World Delirium Awareness Day🧠
Today we recognise World Delirium Awareness Day – an important opportunity to raise awareness of delirium and why it matters so much for people living with dementia and those who care for them.
Delirium is a sudden change in a person’s mental state, which can cause confusion, agitation, or difficulty focusing. Unlike dementia, which usually develops gradually, delirium can appear quickly – sometimes within hours or days 🕑
People living with dementia are significantly more likely to develop delirium, particularly during illness, hospital stays, infections or medication changes. 💊
For families and carers, delirium can be frightening and confusing. However, the good news is that delirium is often preventable and treatable if recognised early. Learning to spot the signs and understanding the risk factors can help ensure people get the right care quickly and may reduce longer-term impacts on health and wellbeing.
That’s why raising awareness is so important.
If you support or care for someone living with dementia, we encourage you to learn more about what delirium is, how to recognise it, and what you can do to help prevent it.
