The Young Dementia Network and Dementia UK have developed a young onset dementia care framework which offers practical, evidence-based steps to help local health systems deliver faster diagnosis and integrated support.

In October 2025 we hosted a launch webinar, which over 800 people signed up for, to demonstrate how the framework can help integrated care boards (ICBs) deliver better outcomes for people affected.

Resharing for advice and information on Halloween 🎃

🎃 Halloween and Dementia 🧠

Halloween can be a difficult time for people living with dementia. The decorations, costumes, noises, and changes in routine can lead to overstimulation and worsen dementia symptoms such as confusion, anxiety, fear, and hallucinations.

1. Overstimulation
Bright lights, loud noises, and constant doorbell ringing can overwhelm someone with dementia.
The brain struggles to filter sensory input, leading to agitation or restlessness.

2. Increased Confusion
Unfamiliar decorations (like fake cobwebs, skeletons, or flashing lights) can distort familiar surroundings. Changes in environment or routine make it harder to recognize time or place.

3. Increased Anxiety and Fear
Costumes and masks can make it difficult for the person to recognize family, friends, or neighbors. They may perceive costumes as threatening or frightening.

4. Hallucinations and Fixed Beliefs
Decorations (e.g., ghosts, spiders) or sounds (e.g., spooky music) may feed into existing hallucinations or delusions, reinforcing false beliefs. This can heighten paranoia or distress.
💡 Tips to Reduce Distress

Keep the environment calm and familiar, avoid excessive decorations inside the home.

Explain to the person what is happening and reassure them often.

Avoid scary movies or loud music.

If trick-or-treaters visit, consider sitting together in a quiet room away from the front door.

Keep lighting warm and consistent to reduce shadows and confusion.

Stick to familiar routines and provide comforting activities (music, gentle conversation, or favorite snacks).

As the weather turns and the temperature drops, SOUPER days are coming……………….

Soup is an ideal meal for older adults and people living with dementia.

It’s easy and quick to make, and can be packed with fresh vegetables, making it both healthy and nutritious.

Soups are easy to eat, especially when served in a bowl or mug.

Soup can be served as starter, a snack or a main meal.

Soup can be enjoyed with bread, croutons, sandwiches, or toasties.

You can boost the protein content of soup by adding meat, beans, or lentils.

You can increase the calories of soup by stirring in cream, milk powder, milk, or butter.

You can serve your soup chunky, smooth or any consistency desired.

Soup has a high water content, which helps with hydration, which is especially important for those who struggle to drink.

Soup of the day - Hearty Vegetable (onions, leeks, carrots, swede, cauliflower, potatoes, butternut, chicken stock, salt, pepper, peas pudding, water)

Vegetables supplied by The Wynd Fruitier
