I’m so excited to say that from June this will be my only job!

The horse work has become so busy that I can no longer sustain the two careers. It’s been coming for a long time but now I know in my heart of hearts that now is the time!

Not only with this give me more time to fit in the horses, but it will give me more headspace to work on a the little projects that have been buzzing around in my head for so long but that I simply haven’t had the time or energy to do anything with!

I’m so excited for the year ahead and look forward to working with all the horses and humans who want to come on this journey with me! 😁😊😊

Lovely analogy of the body position for bend. Recently had a lightbulb moment with this.

Lovely analogy of the body position for bend. Recently had a lightbulb moment with this.

Sound familiar?

I've used this exact analogy [with some modifications] in most of the lessons recently.

To get a feel for the aids that ask your horse to bend…

Imagine walking up a spiral staircase. To negotiate the stairs in balance, you must turn your shoulders on the precise path of the stairs and your seat and leg must be in the correct, stable position to ask for bend.—Corinne Foxley

Foxley was an assistant trainer to Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel at Maryland’s First Choice Farm for more than seven years. She also spent time with Uta Gräf in Germany and has earned her USDF bronze medal.

Lovely to work with Ruth again, normally she’s working on my horse to make him become aware of his tension and help him relieve it, this then improves his posture which then improves his performance. Last night it was her turn to work through the human equivalent!

In the Masterson Method we focus on helping horses recognise the tension in their bodies and then showing them how to release it through movement in a relaxed state.
We can therefore help them adopt better movement patterns when shown how.

The interesting thing is that exactly the same thing happens in our own bodies, and thanks to Gemma from Movement Equestrian I have been able to find a very similar way to release tension and find better more efficient patterns in my own body through JEMS therapy.

I have been feeling a little tight recently for many reasons and tonight Gemma helped me remind my body how in should move properly!

As horse people we are very good at thinking about making sure our horses are ok, but we often forget whatever goes on in our own bodies directly effects our horses when we ride!

I feel it is really important that we think about our own movement, not only for ourselves but for our horses sake too! Thank you Gemma for helping me recognise where I need to release tension in myself which I often find it hard to recognise without help!

The impact of lifting on the pressure in your spine is surprisingly noticeable

What is good posture?

If you ask most people they will tell you that you should stand up straight, with your shoulders back and stomach in. They will then tell you that they don’t have good posture.

There’s good news – standing in that stiff, high effort way really isn’t normal, and nor is it good for you. That’s why so many people just can’t do it!

Efficient posture is the foundation for movement: your effort should be directed towards your life, not just holding yourself up against gravity!

Improving your posture is not about hard work, but about awareness of a new sensation. Stand in a relaxed, almost slumped posture. Imagine for a moment that a very large helium balloon on a string is attached to the back of the top of your head. Make it real for yourself by giving it a colour. Helium rises, so the role of the balloon is to gently lift the weight of your head up off your body. This releases the spine from the compression of gravity. Allow your body to decompress and lengthen without straining. Breathe freely now that the weight of your head as been lifted.

Supporting yourself should not be a strain. Allowing your body to “lighten up” decreases pressure on your joints and helps you to move freely. An ideal natural posture should be comfortable, repeatable and sustainable.
