Every family is unique. So is every farewell.

We are here to help you say goodbye to your loved one, in their way. Whether they would have preferred a traditional funeral, or something different, we’ll help you make the right choice for your loved one.

There are two main types of funerals we can provide:

❤️ Direct cremation - a simple, respectful cremation without a funeral service

❤️ Traditional funerals - a bespoke funeral to say goodbye to your loved one in a personal way

Find out more about each option here: nedowning.co.uk/types-of-funeral/

If you prefer to phone us, our team can explain everything clearly and help you make the best decision.

When someone passes away, those first few hours and days can feel overwhelming.

We understand how hard it can be to know what to do next.

Our simple, gentle guide helps you take those first steps - and reminds you that we’re here when you need us most 💛

1. Please contact us in the first instance, soon after the passing. We can make arrangements for your loved one, including bringing them to our Chapel of Rest. Whether they are at home, a nursing home, or a hospital, we can help.

2. The next step is to obtain a certificate of death. While this can feel very final, it will also help you to move forward when making plans for your loved one.

3. When you feel ready, make an appointment to officially register the death. This can also be a difficult and emotional step, but it will help you put your loved one to rest.

4. Try to get in touch with the person who’s been chosen to look after the practical matters (the executor). They can begin taking care of any important paperwork.

5. See if your loved one left a funeral plan or a will. If there’s no will, that’s okay. Someone close can be chosen to help organise their affairs. The probate registry can gently guide you on what to do next.

6. Once the death has been registered, we can sit down together and talk about the funeral. You’re welcome to visit us at one of our offices, or if it feels easier, we can come to your home.

When someone is grieving, it can be difficult to find the right words to comfort them.

Here are some gentle ideas for what to write in a sympathy card - helping you express care, comfort, and kindness when it matters most 💌

❤️ I’m so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you and hoping you find comfort in the love and support of those around you.

❤️ My heart goes out to you during this difficult time. Please know I’m here for you if you need anything.

❤️ Wishing you peace, strength, and gentle moments of comfort as you remember your loved one.

❤️ There are no words that can ease your pain, but I hope you know you’re surrounded by love and care.

❤️ Keeping you in my thoughts and sending love as you navigate this heartbreaking time.

💛 World Kindness Day 💛

Today we’re reminded that even the smallest acts of kindness can bring comfort when words fall short. A gentle smile, a helping hand, or simply taking the time to listen can mean more than we realise.

At N.E. Downing, we see every day how kindness connects and uplifts our community - especially in life’s most difficult moments.

Let’s all take a moment to show a little extra kindness today, and every day 🌿

We pause in gratitude, remembering their courage, their sacrifice, and the peace they helped secure.

We would like to extend our congratulations to John Adams for his remarkable work in advocating for grief education in schools, which has now resulted in a parliamentary debate on this vital issue. 🏛️

We all understand the importance of preparing young people to cope with loss and navigate grief in healthy, supportive ways. John’s efforts to bring this topic to the forefront of education policy are a significant step toward ensuring that children and young people have access to the resources and understanding they need.
